The Portfolio written essay is designed to focus on one, relevant current topic based on articles from current newspapers, especially the New York Times www.nytimes.com , and other computer accessible sources such as websites. Besides getting students to become experts on one particular issue areas affected this country, the newspaper research will introduce students to a wide range of viewpoints on the controversial issue. Basically, students will follow an approved topic and collect 15 sources from newspapers. Collect and save the articles and then organize them with a commentary essay explaining the development over the period and offering your own observations, thoughts and conclusions. In 2-3 pages (in Times New Roman and 12 Point Font) write about the event/issue that you’ve been tracking for the past 15 weeks. Describe how your issue/event evolved over the past 15 weeks, and include the various points of view on the issue. Lastly, discuss where you stand on the issue and why? Be sure to include in-text citations when necessary and a Works Cited Page at the end of your paper, containing the sources you’ve collected over the past 15 weeks. Feel free to use any legitimate style (MLA, Chicago or APA etc.) for your citations and Works Cited Page.
