Supervising a Diverse Workforce
Researchers at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a federally funded research institute, found the following five key practices to be imperative when implementing a successful workplace diversity program (Pruitt, 2018, para.1):
1. Focus on intervention, not just bias reduction.
2. Invite non-managers to foster communication across the organization.
3. Keep the focus on workplace issues, not personal ones.
4. Keep the conversation going to stay accountable.
5. Be flexible in both content and delivery.
When it comes to recruiting a diverse workforce, Flory et al. (2021) examined the recruiting material for a large finance company with over 10,000 employees. They found that simply advertising the need/want of a diverse workforce more than doubled the interest in openings among racial minority candidates along with the likelihood of them apply to said openings. The study went on to mention that the findings for gender diversity were not as significant.
Workplace diversity encompasses many different areas such as age, ethnicity, and gender; however, religious diversity in the workplace is an area that most supervisors do not consider. In a recent study, Singh and Babbar (2021) declared that it is time to leverage workplace religious diversity. Their findings suggested that the positive attributes of bringing religion to the workplace outnumbered the unfavorable outcomes.
