Analytic Sociological Journal
Sociological Journal Instructions and Prompts
PLEASE USE PARAGRAPH BREAKS IN YOUR JOURNALS FOR STRUCTURE, ORGANIZATION, AND CLARITY.
The Sociological Journal offers students the opportunity to write about connections between their own lives and sociological concepts. Students write a total of THREE responses to the prompts below. Please address the entire prompt and thoroughly elaborate on the examples discussed. Your journal entries should be well well-structured, organized, and well-written. College-level writing is expected for this assignment. Make sure to use paragraph breaks in your journals.
Formatting: Please, type this assignment using Times New Roman, 12-point font, use double space, and have 1-inch margins all around. Each journal response should be between 1½-2 pages (375-500 words). Please include a standard title page with your name, the class name, the date, and an assignment title. Upload the Journal on Canvas as ONE document with the three journal entries identified (e.g., 1, 2, 3).
For each prompt/journal, please provide at least one quote from our textbook that speaks directly to the prompt. Provide a screenshot/photo of the page in the textbook with your quote highlighted. Copy and paste the screenshots at the end of your journal.
I invite students to use ONLY our textbook for this assignment. Students may not use outside sources to answer the prompts. Our textbook offers definitions and discussions of all the concepts the prompts explore. Please do not use AI such as ChatGPT. Student papers will be put through Turnitin.com to help students avoid plagiarism. If you need help with your writing, I encourage you to visit the SMC Writing Center (make an appointment with a writing tutor).
Please answer all three of the prompts below:
Drawing from Chapter 4 in our textbook (specifically the subsection “The Process of Socialization”) define socialization and discuss the two main goals of socialization. Next drawing from the section “Agents of Socialization,” define agents of socialization and discuss how agents of socialization have shaped your life. Discuss which agent of socialization you believe to be the most impactful for you today and why. Please provide several specific examples from your life.
Drawing from Chapter 7, Social Class: The Structure of Inequality, discuss how life chances relate to social class (Choose TWO – family, health, education, work and income, and criminal justice). Next, discuss/analyze your own social class position (either now or while you were growing up). Finally, discuss how the ideology of the American Dream legitimizes social class inequality in the US.
In Chapter 8 of our textbook, the authors assert that “…racism is not yet a thing of the past. Racism is woven into the fabric of American society, from its historical roots to the present day. It is part of our national legacy and still persists within our social institutions.” Drawing from our textbook, define racism, individual discrimination, and institutional discrimination. Next, discuss examples of individual discrimination and/or institutional discrimination that you have experienced or witnessed in your everyday life and your communities (e.g., your family, educational, and/or work experiences). Finally, discuss one potential way to mitigate the racism you have witnessed or experienced.
