BIBL 425
The student will complete 4 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 300 words. For each thread, students must support their assertions from both assigned textbook readings and with at least 1 other scholarly source cited in current Turabian format. No research, however, is necessary in the Final Reflections on Romans discussion. Acceptable sources include the textbook, other books on the topic, and journal articles. The Bible, concordances, and dictionaries are assumed and should be cited but do not count toward the three required citations. Unpublished Internet sources are not usable sources for this class.
Audience in Rome and the Point of Romans 2:1-11
Please consider the assigned reading for Module 2. Set forth your view of whom Paul intended to address in Romans chapter 2:1-11. Were they Jews, Gentiles or a combination? Briefly identify the previous context of Romans and the audience in the previous context. Read carefully Rom 2:1-11 and analyze the passage. What did Paul identify as the reason that those who judge are without excuse? Why would Paul’s insistence that his intended reader is under wrath be a shock to the reader? In the large context of Romans, how should we understand Paul’s statement that God will render to each one according to his works, considering also the intended audience?
Tension in Paul and James
Read Romans 3:21-4:25. Then read James 2:14-26. Decide what the argument is in each passage and post a thread that briefly shows how Paul and James develop the arguments in the passage. Notice that Paul wrote that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law (Rom 3:28) and that Abraham was not justified by works (4:20). Then notice that James says Abraham was, and we are justified by works and not by faith alone (James 2:21; 2:24). Then analyze both points within the flow of thought in Romans 3:21-4:25 and James 2:14-26 and suggest a resolution of the apparent tension between James and Paul.
The Salvation of Israel
Consider Paul’s discussion of Israel in Romans 9-11. After paying special attention to the context of those chapters, and particularly the context in Romans 11, offer a reflection on Romans 11:25-27. What did Paul mean by Israel in Romans 9-11 and especially in Romans 11? What partial hardening did he have in mind? What did Paul mean when he asserted all Israel would be saved, and what does that have to do with Israel’s relationship to the deliverer from Zion?
Final Reflections on Romans
Please post your reflections on what you have gained from studying Romans. What area would you say has most changed in your understanding of the subject matter in Romans? What specifically changed and how has that impacted (including reinforcing) your own doctrinal positions? Please cite passages that specifically where the impact has been. Reflect briefly on the identity of the strong and weak in faith in Paul’s discussion in Romans 14. Based on your reflection above, how would you briefly explain to a new believer still struggling with legalism the freedom that comes with the gospel?
