1. In support of the Argument Analysis portion of your paper

• ● Develop an adequate understanding of Mayer and Salovey’s essential ideas.
• ● Accurately identify the main argument of their text.
• ● Map the structure of their argument – the logical, direct support they offer (in this case, identify the evidence they offer to directly substantiate their main argument).
• ● Use your secondary sources from Romero, Reed, Strauss, and Jeremiah as evidence to substantiate your argument.
  2. In support of the Rhetorical Analysis portion of your paper

• ● Figure out who Mayer and Salovey’s readers are/their primary audience, and how they appealed to them.
• ● Develop a fuller picture of them (audience): why they may have picked up their text, what they might be bringing to it, and especially – what potential resistance to their main argument might some have, if they had only heard their main argument? This is your counter opposing viewpoint.
• ● Identify – distinct from the evidence they offer to directly substantiate their argument – a number of their persuasive/rhetorical strategies – and develop arguments regarding how and why each of those choices are trying to work rhetorically. What is the author’s aim? What strategic choices do the author’s use to increase the likelihood that his/her argument will be accepted? Make distinctions between analysis and evaluation. A writer’s goal is to change a reader’s understanding of a topic in some way, and their efforts to do so involve both direct means [identified in argument analysis] and indirect means [identified in rhetorical analysis]. Know that an argument is “a claim that an author makes about how things are or ought to be.” What subtle persuasive strategies were used by the authors? How does argument analysis and rhetorical analysis fit into the larger process of critical reading and thinking, and how would you form a relationship between the two forms of analysis?
