Part 1 – Reading Question

Answer the following reading question using specific examples from the text including quotations, paraphrase, or summary. Explain your answer.

Identify the examples in the chapter about the topic of what is a “real job” and who are “real” workers. What explains this rhetoric? Who benefits from it?

Part 2 – Analyze anti-union rhetoric

Choose one of the three contexts of anti-union rhetoric from this week’s module and analyze the rhetorical choices made to craft an anti-union message. Your analysis should address all the following:

What tone and mood do the authors of the videos set when describing the company vs. describing unions? 

What rhetorical choices (repeated words, phrases, imagery, visuals, music, etc…) do they make to establish this tone and mood? Tone is the attitude an author has toward a subject or an audience conveyed through word choice and style of presentation. Mood is the overall feeling, or atmosphere, of a text created by the author’s use of imagery and word choice.

What assumptions do the authors of the videos make about each of their different audiences (new employees, managers, employees during a union election)?
