Peer 1: Shared Governance in Nursing
Shared governance in nursing is a crucial concept that involves collaborative decision-making between bedside nurses and nurse leaders. This includes making decisions on resources, nursing research and evidence-based practice initiatives, procurement of new equipment, and staffing. This collaborative technique facilitates active participation within the healthcare team to enhance favorable patient outcomes and fosters a culture of optimism and inclusivity, therefore contributing to work satisfaction (McKnight, 2022). This is a positive decision-making strategy that should be implemented in today’s hospital systems, as both patients and staff can benefit from it.
The following is an example of how this kind of decision-making is applied in a suburban community hospital. Examples of specific targeted alignment and strategic planning engagement included focused shared governance work to improve patient satisfaction scores; improve RN-RN teamwork; and decrease patient falls. The work included seeking innovative and evidence-based approaches. Improving outcomes and processes, with collaboration, ownership, and value-added work, was a primary goal (Brennan & Wendt, 2021 ). In this way, patients can receive the best and updated treatment at the hospital. The negative aspect of this “shared governance” is that Shared governance in nursing often necessitates a heightened workload and a longer time commitment, making it a less appealing choice for bedside nurses who already endure extended shifts (Faubion, n.d.).
In summary, while “shared governance” allows a better nurse engagement in the decision-making process it requires a lot of effort and additional working hours. The reason why it has not been a popular model. If I were to implement this way of governance in a healthcare setting, I would first have a meeting so that there is consensus voting, and I would be to implement bonuses for the nurses who would like to part of this governance.

Advantages of shared governance include increased employee engagement, improved decision quality through diverse perspectives, and enhanced job satisfaction. On the flip side, disadvantages may arise from slower decision making processes, potential conflicts due to differing opinions, and challenges in maintaining accountability (Renshaw, 2023).
To implement a shared governance model in a healthcare facility lacking one, you could begin by assessing the current organizational structure and identifying key stakeholders. Educating staff on the benefits of shared governance and encouraging open communication channels. Also, by establishing clear guidelines for decision making and responsibilities to mitigate potential conflicts could prove to be very helpful.
By fostering a culture of trust and collaboration through training programs and team building activities, this could provide ongoing support and resources to ensure successful implementation (McKnight, 2022). Furthermore, by monitoring the effectiveness of the shared governance model through regular feedback mechanisms and making adjustments as needed is proven to be an effective strategy. This will encourage the continuous learning and development to empower staff to participate actively. Finally, recognizing and rewarding contributions to reinforce the value of shared governance to fit the unique needs and dynamics of the healthcare facility for sustained success.
