Comment 1:
If I had to pick a type of leader that I am with the options available in our reading material, I’d say I would be more on the Laissez-Faire Style. This style of leadership assesses the talents of each employee and assigns them responsibilities according to their skill set. Some characteristics of Laissez Faire employees tend to be highly creative and self-motivated.
I have no interest in controlling people. I except them to know their job and to do it well. If they need me, I would of course be there to help or answer any questions. The leadership roles would be given to the staff that are proactive for their self, team players, goal-setters, and problem solvers. I guess that I have this same mentality in my personal life as I do in my professional life. I do not feel like an educator or that I should be an authority figure to anyone, but I do not mind sharing my knowledge with ones who want it.
The greatest weakness with this type of leadership style would be the hands-off approach. It could cause frustration and cause newcomers to be overwhelmed. Confusion of who the leaders are and identify clear leader roles. Employees may feel like they are missing support. The positive with this type of leadership it allows employees to able to use their skill set and ideas. This type of leadership allows for freedom of choice, effective delegation, sufficient resources and tools, constructive criticism and taking control as needed.
Comment 2:
As nurse being able to reflect on my own personal values is very important. Although I have yet to be in leadership roles, I have seen my fair share of leadership styles in all work environments. When it comes to being a leader, I do believe that one should be fair, open-minded, involved, and firm when necessary. According to Helbig, Whitney, et al. (2022) a transformational leader “Empowers others by building relationships and motivating staff through a committed visionary leader.” which sounds more like my leadership style. I want everyone I work with to grow in every aspect and want my employees to know that we all have the same goal at the end of the day. One strength this leadership can promote is a strong teamwork dynamic because all employees know we all there to motivate each other. However, some problems that may arise are when some people take motivation talk as annoying or as if they are getting critized, because remember everyone has their own ways of doing things. So, when it comes to conflict management transformational leadership “. . . develops positive relationships with their team and be aware of their emotional needs.” (Butler, J, 2021). and this may get in the way of proper conflict resolution. That’s why no matter what leadership style we fall under we must always remain professional and never let personal friendships get in the way of work-related issues.
Comment 3:
Professional values are quite important in the nursing profession as it is vital that they are upheld and aligned to our personal values. These values are the framework that provide a standard for nursing practice and promote ethical competencies. Values such as compassion, human dignity, integrity, diversity to mention a few align with my personal values. This has made delivering quality care to others possible (Habeeb, 2022).
According to Whitney (2021), there are 5 styles of leadership which have developed from various leadership theories. These styles are autocratic/authoritarian, laissez-faire, participative, transactional and transformational. My leadership styles is the participative style. This is also known as the democratic leadership and it gives room for participants to contribute in the decision making process. This leadership style allows for everyone to be seen and heard and it leaves little to no room for bias. One weakness it has is that it may slow the decision process as it may take a longer time for participants to reach an agreement.
My leadership style allows for me to keep a professional relationship with my colleagues at work. With the self awareness I possess, I’m able to understand that everyone deserves respect and we could all be cordial even in our disagreements. Treating everyone around me the same way I will love to be treated makes it easier to have a good relationship with people. My style of leadership doesn’t allow for bias. Everyone with an opinion is allowed to share them, all participants are allowed be to part of the decision making process and no one feels left out/inferior.
Comment 4:
I would say my leadership style is primarily participative, at times crossing with transformational. A participative leader works to involve other group or staff members in decision-making processes and works cooperatively within these groups. One strength of being a participative leader is being open to listening to others and taking a genuine interest in listening to everyone’s thoughts, concerns, questions, and perspectives. It is important to me to have others involved in providing input and helping to make decisions. I work hard to make team efforts collaborative so that each person feels they played a part in the accomplishing goals of the group. One weakness of being a participative leader is having to balance varying personalities and having to sort through varying input, which can potentially make decision-making more challenging and time-consuming. (Helbig et al. 2022) This certainly can prove true for me, along with worrying about back-lash from others who perhaps may not have agreed with decisions I made.
As I work very collaboratively with others, it really helps to strengthen the trust of our relationships, and trust is of utmost importance as a leader. As a nurse leader, when your team has trust in you, there can be improved job-performance, motivation, and better socialization among group members. (Hadi-Moghaddam et al. 2021) When it comes to conflict management, being a participative leader can have its challenges dealing with varying personalities. Sometimes, groups can have strong personalities who are very vocal while the others may refrain from speaking up even when they have something important to say. (Helbig et al. 2022) To remedy this, I ensure I individually ask each person questions so that they don’t feel they have to voluntarily speak up to be heard and I prefer to set the precedence at the beginning of collaboration that everyone will have the chance to be heard and that not everyone may be 100% satisfied, but that we will work to do what is best across the board.

Self awareness is an important element of emotional intelligence and is a critical component for the nurse and patient. “Self awareness
is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don’t align with your internal standards” (Duval, S. and Wicklund,R., 2022).Emotional Intelligence (EI), is the ability to manage both your own emotions and understand the emotions of people around you(Mental Health America, 2024).
Perception of self and client can either positively or negatively impact our interpersonal relationship. As nurses we should learn how to communicate effectively and not make impulsive decisions which can affect the well being of others. Instead nurses should spend time to lend a listening ear; though this is sometimes a difficult task with the heavy workload we are faced with, but clients just want to be heard at times and thus enabling feedback which can set the pace for identifying problems, and setting goals. Showing empathy, asking questions without bias, are important so that strengths and weaknesses can be identified. Our personality, character and traits can also affect these behaviors.
There was an instance where a nurse manager had to deal with two staff nurses(black and white) who exchanged racial slurs on the floor. The manager herself being white had to objectively deal with the situation in an unbiased way. Boundaries were established and a atmosphere was created for dialogue and both nurses were given a chance to explain themselves to resolve the problems.
Comment 6:
A leader who is emotionally intelligent is one who “demonstrates a sensitivity to their own and other people’s psychological health and well-being, directing others towards common goals while developing effective personal relationships with their colleagues and team members” (Lambert, 2021). This is crucial for effective leadership because it’s important for a leader to show that they care about their patients and staff in order to build relationships and gain trust. Nursing is all about understanding how to handle people’s emotions and feelings because our jobs require us to be compassionate to those who need us or look up to us. Being self aware “ensures that nurses can recognize their own emotions and manage their reactions to those emotions, protecting both their mental health and their patients’ well-being” (Cartwright, 2023). Self awareness is key to evolving and growing as a nurse because it allows us to navigate through the stressful times and overcome situations that can lead to burn out by using it to take steps towards learning how to manage our emotions and getting help if needed. An example of someone with a high degree of self-awareness could be a nurse manager working through the covid pandemic. As mentioned in the first article, covid brought huge amounts of stress for patients, families and healthcare workers. Behaviors of a self-aware nurse manager during this time would include one who is confident in difficult situations and able to adapt to evolving changes, able to manage their emotions appropriately and remain calm during stressful times and one who has genuine interest in how their patients and staff are feeling.
