Example2: Pleurodesis is a medical procedure that aims to prevent the recurrence of pleural effusions or to treat persistent pneumothorax by closing off the pleural space. There are two methods of performing pleurodesis: chemical and mechanical. However, chemical pleurodesis is generally preferred over the mechanical method (Ali & Surani, 2023).
During chemical pleurodesis, a sclerosing agent such as talc or doxycycline is introduced into the pleural cavity through a chest tube. This sclerosing agent triggers a strong inflammatory response and fibrosis, leading to adhesion of the pleural membranes. Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue, which can cause thickening, scarring, or contraction of the tissue. Adhesion of the pleural membranes causes them to stick together, which reduces the space between the membranes, preventing the accumulation of fluid or air in the pleural space (Ali & Surani, 2023).
