Strategies for Success in the Online Learning Environment
Introduction
I want to get your attention, so I’m going to be blunt: You are responsible for creating your own learning environment. The good news is that you can do this—and you should! If you’re like me and struggle with some of the online tools and resources that professors use, then don’t worry: there are strategies for success in this new world of education. In fact, working on developing strategies might be more challenging than taking classes online (if it isn’t already). Why? Because while it’s easy to tell a professor what they did wrong or how they could improve their grades from last semester—it’s another thing altogether to figure out how to create your own learning environment using technology. So let’s take a look at some tips for making sure your students get the most out of these new ways of teaching…
Develop a consistent routine and stick to it
Consistency is key to any good routine, and it’s especially important in online learning. You have to be able to say “I’ll work on this at home” or “I’ll do this tomorrow morning.” If you can’t make that commitment, then your efforts will go down the drain.
If you find yourself struggling with sticking to your routine, here are some things that might help:
-
Develop a daily schedule for yourself and stick to it! This might mean making sure that all of your assignments are due at certain times every day—or maybe having one day off per week where no work is due at all (but still teaching). The more structured and consistent this process seems on paper (and through trial and error), the easier it will be for students who feel like they’re drowning under stressors of their own making
Set a goal for yourself to participate in at least one online discussion every week
While it’s important to participate in online discussions, you should also set a goal for yourself to participate in at least one every week. This will help keep your learning momentum going, and you’ll feel good about yourself when you accomplish this.
If you’re having trouble finding an online discussion group or community that fits your goals and interests, there are several ways to go about it:
-
Look for groups related to the subject matter of your coursework or research project—for example, if you’re taking an education course on teaching children how to read with dyslexia (a condition that affects how people process words), then look for groups related to dyslexia within those communities. You might find one dedicated solely towards helping parents teach their kids with dyslexia; another where teachers post photos of their classroom attempts at introducing concepts like letters or numbers; yet another where specialists discuss strategies for helping other teachers implement various programs within districts across state lines! The possibilities are endless here!
Be aware that you are responsible for creating your own learning environment
You are responsible for your own learning.
You are responsible for your own success.
You are responsible for creating an environment in which you can succeed, and in which other people will want to help you achieve that success.
Seek help when you need it
-
Seek help from your classmates and professors.
-
If you don’t understand something, ask a question.
-
If you don’t know how to do something, ask for help in the appropriate forum (e.g., via Slack or email).
-
If an assignment requires more time than expected, request an extension before the deadline hits so that you can complete it properly and on time.*
Don’t be shy! Reach out to your professor, send an e-mail, or ask a question in class.

-
Know what you want to learn and how you can apply it to your life. Then make sure that’s the topic of discussion during lecture time.
-
Pay attention during class so that when it’s time for questions from the audience (or even better: from other students), there isn’t much confusion about what has been covered so far today or if there are any parts left on which we will focus next week.*
Conclusion
If you’re still not sure what the best way to approach your online learning experience is, or if you need help with any aspect of an online course, don’t forget that there are many resources available to help. You can seek out assistance from your professor, your classmates, and even other students who have had similar experiences in their courses! We hope this article has been helpful and informative for anyone who wants some guidance on how best to succeed in the online environment.
