In the Transportation area, ITS will play an important role in our life in the future, which is helping in operations and organizations for the road and freeways. The application of sensing, control, analysis and communications technologies to ground transportation in order to improve safety, mobility and efficiency.

Example of an Intelligent Traffic Service: A preferred vehicle like a bus may be located and identified on the road. With that information, the corresponding traffic controllers may be changed accordingly to give priority to the bus route.

ITS improves transportation safety and mobility and enhances American productivity by integrating advanced communication technologies into vehicles and infrastructure. The USDOT has invested in ITS and the benefits it offers in saving lives, reducing congestion, and making our communities more liveable. By working with the public and private sectors and the academic community, we are fostering innovation, encouraging deployment, and witnessing the success of ITS technologies nationwide
