What Teacher Leaders Need to Know About Working with Adult Learners
Assignment 5 Generational Differences
As you have read in Chapter 4, there is a whole field of study very important to effective teacher leadership called andragogy – the study of adult learners. Adult learners have a very different orientation and motivation for learning than do the students in your classes. Therefore, we must be cognizant of their needs when working with adult colleagues. Further, the adult learners you will encounter in your leadership activities cut across multiple generations (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and future Gen Y). Each of these generations of people have commonalities and differences that need to be recognized in order to be fully effective in leadership activities.

Chapter 4: What Teacher Leaders Need to Know About Working with Adult Learners
There are two assignments in Module 5:
Discussion Post – due on Thursday, with responses to other students’ posts due on Sunday. See the Course Schedule for exact dates.
Assignment 5 Generational Differences. Also see Course Schedule for due date.
Now that you have spent time reading and learning about why schools need teachers who are leaders and the roles you can fill, considered what schools can do to nurture teacher leaders, and examined your own dispositions as related to teacher leadership, it is time for a careful look at the colleagues with whom you will work. Collaborating with and facilitating the work of other professionals is very different from working with students, and the skills in instructional management we have worked so hard to develop are not the ones that are most effective with colleagues.
Chapter 4 in our text, Every Teacher a Leader, has key foundational information on the topic of adult learners. The topics you will address are the following:
Self-examination in terms what you know about yourself and your beliefs
How to improve your work as a teacher leader by considering your own thought processes as related to your work
Understanding the needs of adult learners
Working with different generations of adults and those at different stages of development.
Read Chapter 4 What Teacher Leaders Need to Know in the text. You will be citing information from this chapter as you respond to Discussion Post 2 and as you complete Assignment 5. Specifically focus on the following ideas:
Learning more about YOURSELF as a leader,
Learning more about the needs of adult learners and ways of working with them, and
Working with different generations.
Discussion Post 2 Working with Adults vs Students
Adults and students are two very different populations with which to work as a teacher leader. Each group provides particular challenges.
From your experience, identify a challenge in working with adults that is not generally a challenge when working with students. Cite evidence from the text (pp. 56-59) about andragogy in your explanation.
Provide an example of this challenge that you have experienced, either as a participant or a leader in an adult learning situation.
From the ideas in Table 4.4, describe at least one way you might be able to improve your interaction with this group.
You will post an initial 200-250 word response based on classroom experience, personal knowledge, your personal background, and chapter readings by Thursday at 11:59 pm.
Also, post a minimum of two substantive response posts to classmates by the Sunday due date at 11:59 pm.
Substantive responses add to the original post by offering similar or contrasting examples, asking and answering questions, and providing details about resources or additional readings that classmates may find useful. A Discussion Rubric is available to you to inform your thinking and writing in Week 1 of the course.
