Note: These databases are undergoing extensive changes right now, so we will have to be flexible.
Overview
Students will identify two USA-based and one international organization to review and compare for this assignment.
For USA based organizations: The National Center for Charitable Statistics’ publishes a Beginner’s Guide to Using NCCS Data. The NCCS is managed by the Urban Institute. It includes links to three enormous data sets: IRS Business Master Files, NCCS Core Files, and IRS SOI Sample Files. NCCS also maintains the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities. Their system is in the midst of a major update, which does not yet allow us to search geographically as the previous system did.Browse through the NTEE codes . Think about which of the major code categories is most interesting to you as you begin the selection process for your case study paper.
Like NCCS/NTEE, the Foundation Center is reorganizing its data files. In partnership with Guidestar, the Foundation Center is re-branding itself as Candid. Look at the Foundation Center website to identify organizations with data from their IRS filings, Form 990
Guidestar’s website requires registration but may also be of interest as a source.
Using these data sources plus local information from your community, identify two non-profit organizations that are within your chosen major code category (alphabetical).
Note the next two identifiers for your choices (numeric). For example, Northwestern University is in category ‘B’ Education, B43 Universities.
For International organizations: Using the NCCS Category Q (International, Foreign Affairs and National Security) find an international non-governmental organization that works in the same topic arena as your American non-profit organization, and operates in at least three countries outside the U.S.
Another excellent source of international organizations is the list of organizations having consultative status at the United Nations Economic & Social Council
The UN also maintains an online newsletter to communicate with affiliated INGOs.
Using the organization’s website and any other source documents you wish, find and describe the characteristics of that organization.
Directions
Complete the steps below, record your results, and upload a 2 page memo that is comprised of solely bullet points and is succient and consise.
Identify two USA based organizations and one international organization to include in the memo
Highlight why you chose these three organizations to assess together
For the USA-based organizations, make sure to include:
The organization name, state and city, total revenue, total assets, and IRS type, mission statement, annual budget and main revenue sources, and few sentences about its history
Go to the IRS Form 990, Part I for your organizations and note the primary services offered by each organization. Briefly summarize the information.
Also note at least one critical insight you noticed about the organization (or group of organizations).
For the international organization, make sure to include:
Date and place of founding, name of founder(s), the sphere of action (human trafficking, emergency medical care, climate change, disaster relief, etc.), countries where it works, background of the organization, its mission, and its services, the organization’s budget, including revenue sources and trajectory, total revenue, total assets, and IRS type if applicable.
Any challenges you read about or note this organization is going through
At least one critical insight you noticed about the organization
Compare the three organizations across the range of criteria you included and formulate a memo or briefing that tells me (the professor) why I should be interested in these organizations – what makes them interesting?
Notes
It is best to choose organizations that provide direct services to others, not religious organizations or member-serving organizations (e.g. bar associations, medical societies, labor unions).
Choose organizations with at least $100,000 in annual revenues. Smaller organizations may file very limited data and be difficult to research adequately.
