The global societal issue I have chosen to research for my week 5 Final Paper is International Drug Trafficking. I decided to go with this topic because it is something my contract deals with on a daily basis. We work hand in hand with CBP, ICE, and other government agencies all along the border as well as across the nation and are constantly seizing items with hidden compartments in some of the craziest places in vehicles – tires, gas tanks, floorboards, dashboards, steering wheel, seats, even additional compartments that weren’t there to begin with on vehicles, vessels and aircrafts, and have seen drugs try to come into the country via vegetables down in the southern part of Texas and mixed into honey in Florida and California. Although there were other topics that piqued my interest, I decided to go with drug trafficking since I deal with this on a daily basis.
One way to identify whether a source is scholarly is by identifying where the information came from. By utilizing the CRAAP test, this can help me narrow down articles that are relevant and current to my topic. By using scholarly sources, you know that the research is valid, and not someone’s viewpoint or personal opinion on the matter. I must also take into consideration the credibility of a journal or publisher.
“Exploring the Influence of Drug Trafficking Gangs on Overdose Deaths in the Largest Narcotics Market in the Eastern United States” is an article where the authors address larger U.S. neighborhoods. Most large U.S. neighborhoods with high poverty are drug markets, leading to accidental overdose deaths and gun violence (Johnson et al., 2020). This happens in these neighborhoods because they lack social services, coordinated law enforcement, and housing blight. With the open drug market availability, gangs are formed to make the business run smoothly. Therefore, violence emanates from these guns as they compete for customers and strong territories for distribution. When an area has more gangs, it becomes easier for them to become international drug traffickers and distributors. This article fully supports my claim that international drug trafficking is a societal issue since these neighborhoods have become dangerous areas for humans.
“Sanctions by the Numbers: Transnational Crime and Drug Trafficking” is an article that shows drug trafficking as a transnational crime and a threat to national security. Most transnational criminal organizations acquire about 50% of their income from drug trafficking. The government has, therefore, in the past and currently tried to come up with sanctions and programs to curb these societal issues. However, drug trafficking is still a national threat to human safety despite all measures that have been enacted. There are over 60 countries involved in international drug trafficking on the American continent (Bartlett & Qphel, 2021). The Treasury has, therefore, enacted transnational crime-related sanctions against individuals and entities. This article supports my claim since it addresses how drug trafficking has threatened national security despite sanctions put in place to control it.
