RESPONSE1
Explain the difference between genuineness, warmth, and empathy.
Genuineness describes the act of demonstrating behavior that is consistent with an individual’s unique personality (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Being true to who you are and how you naturally interact with others builds trust. Using warmth in verbal and nonverbal communication from a social worker suggests an interest in the client (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Using empathy is a way of showing the person that you understand what they are feeling or where they are coming from in their statements or actions, validating their feelings, and building a sense of connection (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).
Choose one of these techniques and apply it to a practice example.
An example of a social worker using warmth could include verbal language that validates positive feelings of seeing the client, such as “It is so nice to meet you” when greeting. Warmth can also be conveyed using nonverbal body language such as a smile when introducing yourself and inviting the client into the office. These gestures are inviting and welcoming, allowing the client to feel more comfortable.

RESPONSE2
Explain the difference between genuineness, warmth, and empathy
Genuineness is defined as “The honest, natural, and open expression of yourself” (Kirst et al.,2018). Warmth is defined as “Conveying a feeling of interest, concern, well-being, and affection to another individual” (Kirst et al., 2018). Lastly, Empathy is defined as “Involving not only being in tune with how a client feels but also conveying to that client that you understand how he or she feels” (Kirst et al., 2018).
These three things are different, but also function in tandem with each other. It is important to show empathy toward clients, this indicates that you are listening to them and that you are validating what they are saying. While warmth shows the client that they can feel comfortable talking to you and that you are not there to judge them. This plays into genuineness, where the social worker shows that they genuinely do care for the client. Genuineness connects these three things to each other, if the social worker isn’t genuine in their practice empathy and warmth are hard to show.
Choose one of these techniques and apply it to a practice example.
Using Warmth in the social work setting, with a client is used verbally. An example would be when introducing yourself to a new client. Introducing yourself, then tell them to have a seat on the sofa or chair, and offer them some kind of warm beverage. Drinking a warm cup of tea or coffee can help to calm the nerves of the client and show that you do care for them while also showing your warmth toward them (Kirst et al., 2018).
