Discussion Papers will give students in this course and opportunity to demonstrate their ability to consume, critically think about, and synthesize nutrition information, within the context of existing research, recommendations, and practice. Please read the FAQs(attached) before beginning this assignment.
Even after you leave this course you are going to encounter nutrition information and will have to use the skills gained in this course to compare it to research, recommendations and practice, and to decide what you think about based on your own health and nutrition values. The final assessment in this course gives you the opportunity to do a deeper dive into a nutrition topic of your choice, and to present your findings and summary in writing.
For Discussion Paper Four, you can research any topic related to nutrition that you’d like, but please consider:
That there is enough research on the topic
That you can frame the topic within the suggested outline of the assignment
That you did not cover the topic in-depth in another Discussion Paper
Here are some ideas of papers from past classes, and example papers will be posted.
Added sugars: Do we really have the research to document their impact on chronic diseases
Probiotics: what does the research say vs. current trends
Sin Taxes: How taxes on what we eat, and drink is affecting consumption
Genetically Modified Foods: Pros and Cons
Sustainable Nutrition: The impact of our diet on our carbon footprint and the environment
Coffee: Is it good or bad for our health?
Or come up with your own topic! Please contact the instructor if you have questions about your proposed topic sooner, rather than later.
Conduct a brief literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles, relevant news articles, and other professional and credible statements on the topic.
Your research brief should include background on the issue, pros vs. cons, and a summary of your findings.

Discussion Paper FAQ What is the goal of these discussion papers? The goal of these discussion papers is to demonstrate your ability to consume, critically think about, and synthesize nutrition information, within the context of existing research and recommendations. Individuals are exposed to numerous nutrition messages in various forms, and it’s our aim, that by the end of this class you have the ability to critique those messages in regards to the credibility of who is delivering them, the method by which they are delivered, and their validity based on existing information. It’s also important to consider that the information you are viewing/researching in this class is mostly likely going to be accessed by individuals with higher levels of resources (income, education, etc.). With that in mind as you write your papers, think about this information would be received or implemented by individuals or communities that have less or restricted access to these health promoting resources. Who is the intended audience of these papers? Professional writing has many different types of audiences (other than your professor!). For these Discussion Papers think of your audience as members of the general public who would be making decisions about their own diets or making decisions about programs and policies to impact other people’s diets. Do I need to ask the questions provided in the assignment verbatim? Do I need to cover all of them? No! These are provided to you as a guide so that you can take notes and to assist you in thinking critically about what you are watching. Can I use first person? No, in general it is best to avoid the use of first and third person in professional writing. This does not mean you can’t describe how this film impacts you individually, just word it differently! Instead of “This doesn’t apply to me because of XXX” Use something like this “These recommendations made in the film may not be applicable to all individuals, especially young, college students with limited accessibility to fresh foods.”
