Clinical Field Experience C: Writing Instruction and Strategies
Order Instructions
Assessment Description
Writing is an important aspect of literacy because it is a way of communicating thoughts and ideas. Writing is integrated into every content area and is an important skill needed to be a successful member of society. Effective teachers nurture and grow their students’ writing skills by understanding the writing process, how to assess student writing, and how to plan and implement research-based teaching strategies that support students’ writing needs.
Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Part 1: Observations and Collaboration
Observe your mentor instructing in at least two different content area lessons. Focus your observations on how your mentor integrates writing into the lessons, the strategies used to successfully scaffold writing, and strategies to build vocabulary development supported in the writing process.
Following your observations, discuss the lessons you observed with your mentor, asking follow-up questions about how they support writing for ELLs. Additionally, work with the mentor to select a small group of students, to include at least one ELL, who you can work with to help support writing skills. This may be the same or a different group of students from Topic 3 Clinical Field Experience B assignment.
Part 2: Small Group Work
Work with the identified small group of students to help build their writing skills using an activity you have created that has been approved by your mentor or that has been provided by your mentor. While working with the students, think about their strengths and opportunities for growth considering both their writing skills and vocabulary development. This will allow you to identify how you could support the students in the future.
Use any remaining field experience hours to provide support or assistance to the class as directed by your mentor.
Part 3: Reflection
Write a 500-750 word reflection based on your observations, small group work, and required readings. Your reflection should address the following:
How does the classroom environment support writing development for ELLs?
How did the teacher engage students in content area writing activities?
What challenges did ELLs in the classroom face when writing? How did their present levels of vocabulary hinder their writing?
What scaffolds did the teacher include to ensure that ELLs were supported in the lesson?
What activity did you implement in your small group and how did that activity support the students’ writing skills?
What vocabulary scaffolds did you implement to support students in the writing activity?
How would you continue to support your small group of students in the future in both their vocabulary development and writing skills?
Reference findings from your observations, collaborations, and small group work explicitly within your reflection.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
