1 Running Head: Harbor Village, Inc. Harbor Village, Inc. Florida International University
Abstract The population within the United States is made up of only 4% of the population worldwide, yet 80% of Americans are using opioids. An increasing number of people have lost their life secondary to a drug overdose than from all the car accidents which occurred in 2017 (ASAM, 2019). In this paper, we will briefly discuss addiction in general as well as its impacts on the community. We will also attempt to provide a detailed description of Harbor Village, Inc., the population and services it renders, and its collaborative relationship with a specific agency.
The Harbor Village Substance abuse or addiction has recently become an outbreak in the United States. According to a national study conducted on Drug Use andHealth in 2016, approximately 28.6 million Americans were addicted to drugs. Also, almost 54 million people older than 12 years of age have been abusing prescription drugsat somepoint in their lifetime (Talbott Campus, 2019). According to the American Society ofAddiction Medicine (ASAM), addiction occurs when one repeatedly uses a substance or engages in habits that are uncontrollable regardless of obvious devastating consequences (ASAM, 2019). Many agencies are aiming to provide treatment to people suffering from addiction. For instance, Harbor Village, Inc. is one of the agencies, accredited and licensed by The Joint Commission and by the Department of Children and Families. In this paper, we will try to describe this agency the population it serves, the services it renders, and its collaborative relationship with another agency. First, substance abuse or addiction can have physical and social impacts on both the abuser and its acquaintances. For instance, substance abusers have poor health habits and are more likely to acquire various health conditions such as stroke, heart or lung disease, dental problems, or cancer. They are at higher risk forinfections from needle sharing and unsafesexual activity. Their functioning in society is also impaired (NIH, 2019). Unfortunately, unborn fetuses can also be affected. They can sufferfrom neonatal abstinence syndrome afterbirth. Other acquaintances or family members can suffer from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke or be victims in motor vehicle accidents from misuse of drug prescriptions or illicit drug use (NIH, 2019). Harbor Village, Inc., a Florida for-profit corporation and detoxification center, started providing services around 2013. Some medical and mental health professions dedicated themselves to tackling the epidemic of substance abuse threatening the safety of everyone in the
United States. Harbor Village, Inc. is in South Florida, in a fenced and private property. Everyone is relatively safe since the facility is under 24-hour medical and psychiatric supervision and accessed by Harbor Village, Inc. personnel only. It has secondary settings because a medical staff leads its services in addition to licensed behavioral health specialists such as psychiatrists, nurses, and counselors. Team members include a community resource specialist, a case manager supervisor, a clinical director, a specialist, and a nurse supervisor. It is worth noting that the therapist is a social worker with a masters degree and years of experience in providing cognitive behavioral therapy and in transforming patients life (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Harbor Village, Inc.s mission is to provide resources for healing and recovery. It reads as followed: Our comprehensive, client-centered treatment options are available to people from all areas of the country. We are devoted to providing all patients, regardless of status, history, or background, an individualized, effectiveaddiction treatment across the full continuum of care.? (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). One main goal is to help achieve long-term freedom and recovery from the addiction after identifying its causes using new evidence-based treatment methods and extended support. The staff of Harbor Village, Inc. abides by some values and principles such as virtue, empathy, and honesty (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Although the detox center is in Miami, people from South Florida and beyond can benefit from the services offered, and everyone has access to a free, confidential helpline with trained addiction counselors to determine a suitable program for optimum recovery. The counselors are available 24 hours a day, seven daysa week, andpatients can be asked to be called through the Harbor Village, Inc.s website. According to Harbor Village, Inc. (2019), the philosophy is that everyone deserves a chance to regain control of his or her life. Consequently, payment options for their affordablecare include health insurance among over 80 insurance plans or self-payment.
Harbor Village, Inc. provides extensive addiction treatment through a variety ofservices including drug and alcohol medical detox, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation, partial hospitalization programs, supplemental holistic care options, optional faith-based programs, dual diagnosis treatment programs, evidence-based therapy modules, and individualized regimens of care (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Some ofthe addictionstreatedin the center include alcohol addiction, marijuana addiction, crystal methamphetamine addiction, prescription medication addiction, and cocaine addiction. Some ofthetherapies offered are art therapy, gendergroups, family therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Additionally, clients are given access to resources to reclaim their life as well as treatment to any coexisting mental conditions. Patients first receive medical detoxification treatment from drug detox specialists to prevent or reverse withdrawal. Depending on thesubstance, its amount within thebody, and any concomitant psychological, mental health, or behavioral comorbidities, it might be necessary to use medications to ensure a safe recovery. Otherwise, the detoxification process can occur naturally while under close supervision. Onesetting for detoxification is an Inpatient Detoxification Center, where patients are not exposed to external distractions and causative factors. Patients can also be placed in Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for dedicated and personalized support and guidance. Alternatively, if feasible, patients can receive treatment through IntensiveOutpatientPrograms while they carry out their daily responsibilities (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). After a successful detoxification period, the patients transition into Inpatient Residential Rehabilitation to develop an aftercare plan after identifying the contributing factors, strategies, and coping techniques to prevent relapse and maintain sobriety. Resources provided include
?access to education, employment resources, and housing assistance (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Through Aftercare Planning, recovered patients receive resources for continued care, stable housing in a healthy environment, education, and employment. Harbor Village, Inc. provides alumni support services, namely the Alumni Community Support, including monthly getaways, support groups, and relapse prevention help for detoxified clients (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Patients have access to Outpatient Programs at any time during their recovery. The treatment uses an approach that considers both mental and behavioral conditions to promote continued sobriety and healing. Everyone at the Harbor Village, Inc. also provides addicted individuals equal and judgment-free treatment using a holistic and personalized approach. In other words, they have a positive mindset, and they utilize various methodsdepending on the clients needsand preferences. Harbor Village, Inc. promotes an enjoyable detoxification experience with semi-private or fully private rooms, access to a spa, salon services, gym, and outdoor recreational areas, catered meals, meditation and yoga sessions, movie nights, gaming parties, and weekly facilities events (Harbor Village, Inc., 2019). Harbor Village, Inc. has a collaborative relationship with Niznik Behavioral Health, the primary addiction resources center located in Miami Gardens, Florida. Niznik Behavioral Health is the national provider of behavioral health services for adolescents and adults, and it was founded by Robert G. Niznik. Harbor Village, Inc. is one of its eight behavioral health facilities, and, as such, both Harbor Village, Inc. and Niznik Behavioral Health offer similar services to help addicted individualsget a sober life (NBH, 2019). On thesame token, Harbor Village, Inc. recently added morethan 120 beds to its center, notably 40 new bedsin thedetox section and85 bedsin thetreatment section. Possible challenges include the widespread belief that all
detoxification centers are not providing patient-centered services to people who are addicted to substances. Another challenge is theintake interview process during which the staff at Harbor Village, Inc. getsto knowthe individual to tailor an individualized plan. Some patients are reluctant to reveal the deeper causative factors which need to be addressed to prevent relapse. The patients must first acknowledge that they need help, and they must honestly reveal their struggles. In 2018 only, nearly 20.3 million individuals had a type of addictivedisorder, and only 17% of them receive the needed treatment. Addiction treatment centers play an essential role in helping those people who are addicted to substances such as alcohol, marijuana, crystal meth, prescription drugs, and cocaine. The staff at Harbor Village, Inc. provide excellent care, going above and beyond while using evidence-based practices in a healing environment. The patients receive one-to-one, individualized care from dedicated staff members. Most importantly, patients enrolled at Harbor Village, Inc. receive needed treatment for coexisting mental disorders, which are highly linked to substance abuse (Kelly, Daley, & Douaihy, 2012). Many patients acknowledge the countless benefits they derive from the treatment at Harbor Village, Inc., notably sobriety and a new sense of life.
