Assess analyze situations as an engaged citizen and as a social worker by examining the structure, historical relevance, currency, and social work perspective; Intervention use our voices
social work report
Policy courses teach you to engage in policy practice and ensure that you integrate other aspects of knowledge into these concepts by analyzing areas using a standardized approach to being an engaged citizen and an active social worker.
The first CSWE competency is to “Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behavior,” and policy practice also emphasizes three (3) competencies, as noted below. These exercises result in a Response Paper that you use to demonstrate the attainment of one of these competencies via your E-Portfolio as you get closer to graduation.
Competency 2: Advance Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice
Competency 3: Engage Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) in Practice
Competency 5: Engage in Policy Practice
In both policy courses SOW 3232 and SOW 3233, our classes emphasize the importance of engaging and assessing a topic, using our voices as our intervention to advocate, and ensuring that we are clear on how we will evaluate our work.
In policy practice, we use the four (4) stages of the social work process:
Engage listen to clients and stay current on relevant information by reading newspapers and other relevant sources to stay abreast of issues and concerns;
Assess analyze situations as an engaged citizen and as a social worker by examining the structure, historical relevance, currency, and social work perspective;
Intervention use our voices to advocate, including our verbal skills, written projects, creative endeavors, and the actions we take;
Evaluation ensure that our focused outcomes are clear and measurable and that our call to action is clear, concise, and understandable.
The point of our policy course is to find ways to use our voice to advocate for change by integrating our knowledge of the structure, relevant history, currency, and social work values into our analysis.
Accordingly, I want you to ensure that you are demonstrating the following goals in your response paper to ensure that you are presenting these ideals:
Use your voice to advocate and integrate structure, historical relevance, currency, and social work values in your analysis and presentation.
Understand the structure of the Constitution and some relevant laws related to the African American community as noted in the Textbook and other sources you use to attain knowledge.
Demonstrate currency of knowledge on these issues via The New York Times
Apply social work values and perspective to these issues to advance your practice.
The Response Paper assignment involves many steps, including the following:
Watch the film
13th is a documentary film on Netflix. You can watch it on the streaming service if you are a member, but they have also made this film free of charge on YouTube as a community service.
Netflix Film 13th via YouTube
Review how this film fits into your knowledge of the structure of our governmental system (Constitution).
Identify and examine some relevant history about the African American community in your analysis
Search The New York Times to ensure currency on the African American issues such as Black Lives Matter, voting, and the backlash about being “woke.”
Review the NASW Core Values and examine how these help you analyze and understand these issues within our core values.
Write a formalized response paper with the thesis presented and based on the outline provided to ensure an in-depth review of the issues and a focused, structured written document about these issues.
Thesis for the Response Paper
While some disciplines are value-neutral, Social Work relies on our shared core values, an emphasis on being an engaged citizen, and using our voices to advocate for human rights and social change because our discipline engages in Policy Practice, engages in Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI) in Practice, and advances Human Rights and Social, Racial, Economic, and Environmental Justice.
I. Introduction
Below is the outline that you should use to write your response to this film and integrate the concepts of this course into your work product.
(To get you started, I took the liberty of writing your first paragraph. Copy and Paste).
The documentary film “13th” (DuVernay, 2020) explores the intersection of race, social justice, and mass incarceration in the United States of America as exemplified in the 13th Amendment of the Constitution ((U. S. Const. amend. XIII). After watching this film and examining this movie within the context of American public policy, this paper will summarize the film, and discuss these issues within the structure, historical relevance, currency, and social work perspective, while concluding by sharing the student’s personal opinions on these matters.
II. Film Summary
(Summarize the film. What did you learn? What does it tell you? What did it emphasize? What did the film clarify for you? )
III. Analyze
(Here is your third paragraph simply copy and paste)
Social Workers engage and assess subjects and areas of inquiry to analyze situations from the perspective of engaged citizens and as value-based social workers. Using a 4-prong approach developed in class, the author will examine the film based on structure, historical relevance, currency, and social work values.
IV. Structure
Examine the Constitution and the amendments particularly the 13th and apply your knowledge to the film. Was the Constitution written with African Americans in mind? Any relevant laws that you want to include?
V. Historical Relevance
Examine the Textbook and look up “African Americans” in the Subject Index to find relevant information to help you place this movie into the historical context. Examine issues of slavery, Plessy v. Ferguson, Jim Crow, Brown v. Board of Education, Civil Rights Act (1964), and google the term “redlining laws.” Place some of the significant issues you learned within the context of the film to demonstrate your understanding of these issues.
VI. Currency
Google concepts like “African Americans,” “Black Lives Matter,” and other issues of relevance. You can also use the New York Times site and search there too. What about terms like “Florida black vote,” “Florida Law WOKE,” and “Critical Race Theory.”
VII. Social Work Values
List the six (6) core social work values and examine these within the context of the film and what you learned. How do the CSWE core competencies integrate with these concepts?
VIII. Conclusion
Conclude by summarizing what you learned about the Constitution, relevant history, film, and current events and how this influences your perspective as an engaged citizen and empowered social worker and how you can apply this knowledge to your social work practice.
