There is a sense of hopelessness that permeates the camp. We were completely defeated in the Battle of Cannae, and we have run out of supplies as a result. It appears that the leadership of Hannibal is the only thing that is keeping us together at this point, as our Spanish troops are on the verge of deserting.
In such a hopeless circumstance, it is difficult to locate any glimmer of optimism. We are encircled by death and destruction, and there does not appear to be any way out. Everywhere I turn, I see men who have been injured and are on their way to death, but we are unable to assist them.
It is difficult to see any light at the end of the tunnel, which is having a negative effect on the morale of our troops. We have encountered a lot of obstacles up to this point, but none of them have been as difficult as this one; it appears that we are only a few steps away from total and utter failure.
I can only hold out hope that Hannibal will come up with a strategy that will help us win this fight and change the tide of the conflict in our favor. I will keep my head up till then and keep my concentration on the task that is currently in front of me.
