Assessment Description
Class:
Please use standard SSKCG2 for this social studies lesson plan and use VAK.CN.2 I for art. Please follow all the directions!
I am so excited about reading your benchmarks that are due in week 5!! Everything you are doing in this class is preparing you for the benchmark. Remember that a unit means that everything connects from one day to the next. The unit plan will focus on government and economics of a selected country and the U.S. (comparing the selected country to the U.S). I want to make your load a little easier, so I am condensing some things for this plan. Be sure to still read the directions. Here are some important reminders as we move forth:
The template is found under Topic 5.
Summary & Rationale. IMPORTANT: For some strange reason, this benchmark has a summary/rationale section in the template and asks again for you to write a rationale under the template. To save you some time, don’t place anything in the summary/rationale boxes in the template. Instead just write in Monday’s box…See rationale below. Your rationale will be written under the template. It should only be 250-500 words. This will be just like your reflection.
Standards & Learning Objectives. If you are using the same art and social studies standard all week, that is fine. Just make sure that you are copying and pasting them into each box for standards. Bullet point all standards and learning objectives if you are using more than one.
Vocabulary. Vocabulary will be the words that you are using for each day’s lesson.
Instructional Strategies. Choose 1-2 strategies that are already provided in the box and discuss how you will incorporate them into the lesson. Try to give a different strategy each day. So for example if you choose direct instruction you could state something like the following:
Direct Instruction: Today I will introduce life in China. I will start by asking students what they know about China (prior knowledge). I would then have the students sit on the carpet and show a short film on life in China. During this time, I will stop the video and go over specific vocabulary and also ask open-ended questions. Don’t just write the strategy and not explain what you are doing with the strategy.
Summary of Instruction and Activities. I only need a 3-5 sentence summary covering what you are doing for each day. Please don’t duplicate the same summary each day. This will be a great section to write about PEN PALS.
Differentiation. Make sure to use the classroom profile for the differentiation section. (This is very important)! Discuss 1-2 different students each day from the classroom profile and explain how you will differentiate instruction for those students as it pertains to that lesson for the day. I should not see the same students’ names every day. You are using the same classroom profile you are using this week, so it should look almost similar to what you are doing this week.
Materials &Technology. This section is self-explanatory.
Formatives. You will give one formative assessment each day, but make sure that you explain your formative. Make sure to provide a different formative each day.
Summative. Summative should only be given on Friday(that is why one big block was given). A summative can be a test, play, essay, power point, etc. A quiz is not deemed as a summative. If you are unsure about this, please look at the attachment I placed on Week 3 announcement.
Integration of visual arts (this can be a painting of the country, video made by students, pictures of the country, sculpture, etc). If you are unsure, please Google visual arts or email me.
To make sure that we are all on the same page, please send me a “message” stating that you have read the benchmark announcement. This assignment is worth a lot of points, and I just want to make sure everyone understands the expectations. I will have a zoom meeting concerning the benchmark on February 19th. When you message me, let me know if 7PM EST or 8PM EST will be a good time for you. Please try to attend if you can. I return benchmarks too many times and many times it is because people have not read.
I want you to have fun with this unit lesson plan.
Throughout this course, you have had the opportunity to research and implement a learning activity that is cross-curricular with social studies and the arts, along with appropriate instructional strategies, questioning strategies, and differentiation.
Part 1: Social Studies Unit Plan
For this benchmark, you will plan a weeklong unit using the “Social Studies Unit Plan.” The unit plan should include social studies integrated with the visual arts and require students to research a country of their choice. You may adapt any previous assignments and lesson plans in the creation of this mini-unit plan, as long as the lessons form a planned cohesive unit. The unit plan will focus on government and economics of the selected country, U.S. and world history (comparing the selected country to the U.S), and geography and social studies of the selected country.
Use the “Class Profile” for background information on your students in order to differentiate to meet the diverse needs of students.
Design the unit plan so that it:
Develops students’ abilities to make informed decisions in a culturally diverse democratic society and interdependent world.
Integrates visual arts to promote communication, inquiry, and engagement.
Incorporates responsible use of media, digital tools, and resources, including:
Virtual pen pal options with students from the selected country.
Safety measures for using the Internet in the classroom.
Research of performance and visual arts of the selected country.
How students can communicate and collaborate with students of other cultures.
Part 2: Rationale
Along with the unit, submit a 250-500 word rationale that explains the reasoning behind your instructional strategies and choices. Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.
