Get it written →To address health or relatedissues in your community, you need detailed information about the needs of individuals and the organizations that serve them. Equally important is understanding the resources that your community already has available to address those needs. You want to make sure that your program is not duplicating already available resources, and that it fits in well. To get that information, it’s best to develop a specific plan for identifying local needs and resources.
Read the following scenario and post how you would begin collecting data for this community assessment, using the resources in Chapter 4 of your text and/or others you read about at the Community Toolbox website found in this week’s multimedia section. Be sure to respond to your classmate’s post and collaborate.
“The Pine Grove Health and Community Services Coalition had just formed. The organizations and institutions involved — the local hospital, community-based human service organizations, school district, local branches of state service agencies, the community college, local government and public health officials, community activists — were ready to take on a project, but realized they needed to decide what would benefit the community most.
Everyone seemed to have a different idea about what the Coalition should tackle. The health providers thought it should be a health issue but couldn’t agree on which one. The human service organizations had the same problem, and the elected officials were concerned about how voters would react if an issue that they didn’t care about was chosen. After some debate, it was decided that the obvious course of action was to conduct a community needs assessment to identify not only the community’s actual needs, but also the resources that were already available to help meet those needs. By getting the real information, the Coalition could proceed knowing that it was going in the right direction.” Contributed by Catie Heaven Edited by Kate Nagy and Jerry Schultz from theCommunity Tool Box Website Links to an external site:
