For the final week I decided to look into S. Sonnei outbreak in the UK. “Shigella sonnei is the emerging pathogen globally, as it is the second common infectious species of shigellosis (bloody diarrhoea) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and the leading one in developed world.” (National Library of Medicine, 2020) Basically a type of bacteria that causes diarrhea. The UK reported 48 cases of S. Sonnei between Nov2021-Oct2022. 23 of the cases of S. Sonnei had reported travel to Cape Verde, while 9 reported travels to the African continent. S. Sonnei can affect all age group, but the average age of people during Nov2021-Oct2022 were age 51 ranging from age 2-77. Per the CDC, drinking fluids can help with dehydration, while taking antibiotics can shorten the time of fever and diarrhea. One surprising condition that was posted on my local Riverside County public health website was Legionnaires disease. Legionella also known as Pontiac fever is a condition often caused by breathing in small droplets of infected water. Often patients contract the condition from wearing unclean face masks. Legionnaires disease is a form of pneumonia and presents with cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. In Riverside county 2020 had a total of 29 cases in 2021 they report 37 cases. The 2022 statistics have yet to be posted.Those affected most by the disease are people 50 years or older,current or former smokers,people with pr-existing lung conditions, people with weakened immune systems, and those with other significant conditions (diabetes, kidney failure, liver failure). Some ways to prevent further spread of the disease is to make sure building owners and managers utilize their local water management programs to keep water appropriately treated. Another prevention method would be to make sure people are keeping their masks clean, using new ones, and not using masks that are damp.

For this week discussion i pick the first topic. Many people believe that ending one’s own life is a human right, particularly for those who are terminally ill and suffering from indescribable pain or impairment. Physician-assisted death should not be confused with euthanasia, which involves a person bringing about the death of another in order to end their suffering, but not necessarily with medical assistance or consent of the patient. In a physician-assisted death, a physician provides the means for a severely ill person who has chosen, voluntarily, to end his or her own life. Physicians are expected to uphold the ethical norms of their profession, including fidelity to patients and respect for patient self-determination. Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks.Instead of engaging in assisted suicide, physicians must aggressively respond to the needs of patients at the end of life. Physician must provide good communication and emotional support and must provide appropriate comfort care and adequate pain control. No one considers assisted suicide lightly. Anyone who even entertains the idea is likely facing an incurable illness, unbearable pain, or a looming loss of functioning that they find unlivable. Helping a person die by suicide outside of a medical setting is generally considered a crime. Finally it’s important that everyone make a choice or decision when it come to end their life but as a doctor is your job to cure or help the person to heal instead of helping the person ending their life.

For this week’s discussion forum, I have chosen question number one. Physician assisted suicide is something that I have some knowledge about due to previous classes. I feel that anyone who is terminally ill should have the right to ask for physician assisted suicide. The reason I believe that this should be an option is because in most cases of terminally ill people, quality of life tends to decrease. This is something that through research, many people have agreed with. I think that this should be an option for those who are suffering and have no enjoyment in life due to being terminally ill. With physician assisted suicide, for it to even be an option, I feel that patients have to be terminally ill and a diagnosis of six months or less to live. I feel that terminal illnesses can decrease the quality, enjoyment and overall wellbeing of a persons life and if wanting to make the decision whether they want to continue their life or not should be their right. I think that all states should allow this decision for those who really want the choice, that is if they are able to make that decision themselves.

Hello class,
We all made it to the end! To me the best tools that i found the most beneficial were the PDFs attached each week which helped walk use through how to complete the weeks assignments. Without those it would have been way more difficult and a kind of trial by fire way of learning. Just learning basic excel fundamentals will benefit me in my day to day life because i work on the computer for work and I create spreadsheets so just knowing the basics on how to use excel and how to calculate will make things much easier. i believe the discussions were useful because we were able to offer advice to our peers if we needed help. i am taking business and management classes next week and these classes including this one will lead me closer to my bachelors degree.

Hello everyone,
It is hard to believe that we have already come to the end of this course. I have enjoyed this course and am happy for what I have learned in this course. The resource that I liked the most was being able to understand what correlation there is between data sets. I Like this because working in the fitness industry I can see if there is a positive or negative correlation when doing exercise testing. By using the information in this course, I am able to apply it towards exercise experiments that I am able to collect data for and put it together which in the future can further support any argument I may come up with for my hypothesis. I feel that the discussions were very useful because I was able to see how others thought and how they were able to work out the content learned. I feel they will be useful to use in real life because if I am ever having any issues, I am able to see how someone else may work with the same issue and can get a second opinion on that issue. After this course I will actually be taking a strength and conditioning course for my major. I have really enjoyed learning in this course and I can not wait to see what else the future may bring to us to learn.
