The expectations for ethical standards and behavior in an organization is usually modeled and communicated by its leaders. A healthcare administrator is accountable for setting, maintaining, and evaluating ethics of their employees. What happens when an employee identifies a deficit in a leader who doesn’t uphold ethical standards? What would you do if you were in the situation described by this employee? I was working in the Emergency Department and I had a patient that was being loud and disruptive. My team lead wanted me to get the patient out as soon as he was discharged. I said I needed to get a final set of vitals before discharging the patient and the team leader told me to make them up, he added that “everyone does it”. I ended the situation by refusing, I said no and I went and got my final set of vitals and discharged the patient.
