Looking at statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I decided to focus on the emerging infectious disease of HIV. This is a prime example of animal to human infection initially which has been described through close contact with chimpanzees in Africa. The CDC reported approximately 34,800 new HIV infections in the year of 2019. The most cases were reported in the mid 1980’s, and since then has reduced by over 60%. Facts surrounding HIV include that first, approximately 1.2 million people within the United States have HIV. HIV has a huge impact on particularly racial and ethnic minorities, as well as gay, or bisexual men. HIV has been a huge issue within the US for my entire life. I feel that there have been a lot of preventive disease progression methods that are benefiting the public. From medications that can suppress the virus to an undetectable state making transfer non transmittable an amazing breakthrough, and is saving so many lives. Hopefully years from now, with the advancement of medicine causing a non-transmittable and non-detectable status of HIV in those who seek medical treatment, we can get to a statistic year of 0% HIV in those who have been diagnosed and treated. This will then end the HIV Epidemic which will be a beautiful day signifying medical research and advancement solidity, as well as improve the health of the citizens within the U.S. Have a great week everyone I wish everyone the best in their education journey!
