Noah is a 6-year-old boy whose parents came to the US from China for graduate school just before he was born. They have stayed in the US and are in the process of applying for citizenship. Noah’s parents are not religious but have adopted some American customs, such as Christmas. Noah’s mom shared that her own family was “old school Chinese” but that she and her husband are parenting with less violence. She shared that they are worried about Noah’s behavior at school because he is unpredictably lashing out at other children while they are playing, and none of the children want to be friends with him. Nobody showed up to his birthday party. She shared they have high expectations for Noah, that he practices piano each night and has been playing violin since he was 3. She shared that she is aware of how important his school record is for college, he is at risk of being suspended, and how much is at stake if Noah’s school behavior continues even though he does well academically, and she suspects he is very gifted intellectually.

The critique: After you have attempted to use the terms and concepts from the theory to describe the child’s situation, what is left unexplained? In what ways did this theory or explanation come up short? In what ways did it explain things very well, in your opinion?
