During this course, you will explore and engage in discussions surrounding a variety of leadership theories and topics. By the end of the semester, you will be able to articulate in detail your personal leadership philosophy, which will be informed by the course’s instructional content, learning activities, and your own research.
As your approach to leadership develops, it will important to recognize and navigate your personal opinions and beliefs in contexts where you have opportunities to lead. For this first discussion forum:
Introduce yourself to your colleagues. Explain your level of interest in this course and what you hope to gain from it.
Identify one bias you have that might affect your perception, attitude, or behavior in a leadership context. To help you to identify the bias, consider the following questions. You do not have to respond directly to all of these questions in your discussion post, but they will help you to recognize areas of unconscious bias:
What beliefs or values do you hold that no one could convince you to change?
What people or scenarios trigger extreme emotions or behavioral reactions from you, including happiness, anger, or frustration?
In what situations do you base judgments on “gut feelings” rather than facts?
Explain, if applicable, steps you have taken to acknowledge this bias in your personal or professional life.
