The film screening I attended was the November 18th film screening of Speed Racer (2008). It was a film I was surprised to enjoy, as during the presentation it was stated that it was not a great box office success. That was something that greatly stood out to me, as it was made by amazing filmmakers. I had known about Speed Racer vaguely because it was a show my dad watched as a child. What I was not expecting for the film to have such a strong plot, a great and unique editing style, and a beautiful use of animation. I loved that the live-action still involved elements that paid tribute to the original nature of the show/anime, while also keeping those anime aspects in the film. In the presentation, the difficulty of adapting Japanese anime to an American-style film was never a feat easy to complete successfully because of the cultural artistic differences. The presenter felt strongly that this film did a great job of capturing the essence that anime drama gives, and I definitely agree with that sentiment. Initially, I did not like the unrealistic and jarring look of race cars. Nonetheless, as the film progressed, I felt like it was something that added to the film, not hindered as it took the racing even further into a different world. I really liked how the flashbacks were edited as the camera moved in circles around the characters, and felt like it was an exciting choice in editing that I hadn’t seen too often before. I feel like the film was ahead of its time and it would have been a film appreciated much more by audiences today. It’s a film I definitely would recommend to a friend, as I feel like it had an interesting and plot-twisting storyline.
