        My choice is the vejigantes. They are a symbol of petty demons who represent the Moors who fought against the Christians under the command of Santiago Apóstol. The mask of the vejigante loiceño is carved from the bark of the coconut. The facial features are grotesque and exaggerated and usually have three to five horns on the forehead and sides of the mask. Traditionally, they were painted red, green, and yellow, but today a variety of bright colors are used. The masks of the vejigantes of Loíza present a certain resemblance to the masks built in West Africa, from where the black slave population came to a considerable extent. Vejigantes walking through the streets in the festivities of Santiago Apóstol. The festivities of Santiago in Loíza represent the fusion of Spanish culture and African culture in Puerto Rico, representing a unique mixture. There is a myth about Santiago’s appearance in the Spanish army when there was a battle against the Moors in Spain.
