Main objective: to present research on the cause (1), event itself (2} and legacy (3) of a specific disaster. Key Term: "disaster" = a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe, that causes great damage or loss of life. Note: for your assignment, you must pick a disaster that is result of human beings, either intentionally or accidentally. What your research should focus on: 1. Causes: your paper will discuss the causes of your chosen disaster. A disaster made by humans is clearly the result of human action. However, the people who are directly responsible for a disaster are also part of a culture (a way of thinking, a source of values, a specific ideology}, economic pressure and social or environmental circumstance. In other words, the “cause" of a disaster may be more complicated than the actual people whose actions directly cause the event. 2- The 9"th itself; part of your paper can look at different opinions of ‘what happened’ However, a good paper looks at different opinions, not facts. Writing that many authors agree that 1500 people died on the sinking of the Titanic is NOT good research. However, discussing different views on the order of events that caused the ship to sink is acceptable because you will be examining different opinions. 3- Legacy: how did the event affect a country’s culture, policy and laws or people? How is the disaster remembered? Are there enduring lessons or cautionary tales from the disaster? *You may find that the requirements of this assignment—in terms of how your research paper should be written—will become much clearer by consulting the Sample Research Essay on your MyCC.
