Tell Me Who You Are Sharing Our Stories of Race, Culture, Identity”, create your own personal identity story
“Writing A TMWYA Story” – Personal Narrative
This assignment is worth 30 pts, or 75% of the complete Personal Narrative – “Writing A Own TMWYA Story” Assignment.
Referring to the many, many personal narratives within the book “Tell Me Who You Are Sharing Our Stories of Race, Culture, Identity”, create your own personal identity story. Explain everything in detail.
It is important to assess “who you are” at this point in your life to identify your uniqueness, to consider where you came from, dissect what experiences and relationships formed the core of you, to verbalize details about the person you want to become, and to practice empathetic response to others with differing lived experiences and opinions.
– Start with the question our TMWYA authors asked each person to begin their interviews – “How has race, culture, or intersectionality impacted your life?” – and go from there – sharing as much or as little of your personal journey and experience through these issues as you are willing to share.
– Speak in 1st person.
– Feel free to change names for anonymity purposes when telling your stories.
– For Extra Credit = include (2) Clarifying details to add history, vocabulary, or context to your story.
The following helpful instructions are found in the Chapter titled “How To Share Your Story,” in pgs. (359 – 363).
1. Do your research ahead of time. Review the vocabulary we have practiced in this class.
2. Don’t make assumptions about others. Stick to your own story and keep an eye out for your own unconscious stereotypes, biases, or false narratives of racial history that most of us learned in school.
3. Challenge yourself to be vulnerable and uncomfortable while keeping in mind that your peers and future CFA 100 students might read your narrative.
4. Ask open-ended questions of yourself. Try to provide details into the WHY of how you believe the things you do. Give us some history and context to better understand your experiences.
5. Speak YOUR truth. Avoid generalized statements that speak for entire groups of people.
6. Acknowledge your own position and privilege as part of your intersectional identity. In addition to race, privilege can show us as family structure and stability; skin lightness (within or across different races); access to, quality of and level of education; access to medical care; body size; ability; class and economic rank; community support; or access to role models and opportunities to improve oneself.
7. Affirm rather than invalidate others’ experiences.
8. Place your personal experience in a systemic context. Without removing necessary blame from individual actions, we should try to understand the systems of oppression or ignorance in place that formed that person’s words or actions or general statistics.
9. Call IN rather than Call OUT. Check IN rather than check OUT. If you have made mistakes or misjudgments – acknowledge and identify them, apologize, and do better next time. If you have been hurt or offended, try to react constructively with patience and compassion rather than angry public shaming.
10. Focus on solutions and changes to your own beliefs and behavior.
How have you or your relationships changed as a result of the interviews in this book and our class discussions?
How can you find an ally or be an ally to issues that have been mentioned?
As a result of your increased knowledge, exposure, and compassion, what do you plan to DO differently?
