“Small Fates” or “Novels in Three Lines”
Small fates are short three-line/sentence stories that summarize reports of “true stories of murder, mayhem, and everyday life presented with a ruthless economy that provokes laughter even as it shocks” (New York Review of Books). These small fates were popularized by the French writer Félix Fénéon. Here are a couple of examples of his “three-line novels.”:
– “With a hook a washerwoman of Bougival fished out a parcel: a healthy newborn girl floating downstream.”
– “Too poor to raise him, he claimed, Triquet, of Théligny, Sarthe, smothered his son, aged 1 month.”
Nigerian American writer Teju Cole used Twitter to follow in Fénéon’s footsteps, writing small fates in tweets. Here is an example of one:
– “Two women threshing corn. Two babies strapped to their backs. Lightning descended in Bauchi, and took all four.”
