Healing Hospital: A Daring Paradigm Student’s Example Essay
When it comes to healing hospitals, they are more than just patient care. Healing hospitals have not only love and compassion for the patient, but for their family as well. The environment in a healing hospital tends to be focused on loving, compassionate and an overall appealing environment so that the patients and their families can try to get through their difficult times. Laurie Eberst describes a healing hospital to be enhancing the overall wellness of the patients and their families for not only their brain, but also their spiritual and feeling needs of life (Eberst, 2008). Spirituality needs is defined by David Nash as being either a sensitivity or attachment to religious or other values that helps a person gain insight, self-knowledge, and a heightened understanding of life (Nash, 2009). There are three main components of a healing hospital; the environment being compassionate and loving care, integrating technology and work designs for more privacy and security, and the philosophy from Erie Chapman about radical loving care. The component of creating an environment comes from Laurie Eberst. She states that when patients are sleeping is when their bodies perform the most repair since cells regenerate faster during sleep (Eberst, 2008). When a patient has an environment that is filled with compassion and loving care, they are going to be more likely to sleep more out of being comfortable. When the healing hospital has integrated technology, it allows the hospital to give the best quality care that they can. The philosophy of a culture of Radical Loving Care promotes the healing of patients that meet not only the patients physical needs, but it goes through their emotional and spiritual needs as well. Chapman continues to state that the spirituality and religious affiliation of the healing hospitals recognize that a person is more than just physically, mentally, and emotionally status of self (Chapman, 2003).
According to Chapman, there can be 5 daily challenges that healing hospitals have to deal with. The first one has to deal with the technology they have. He goes into say that the technological predestined in medical field influenced health care workers to forget about the necessities of healing beyond just the body, but also of their soul and spirit with loving care (Chapman, 2003) Secondly, he notes that individuals have to take the job of working in a healing hospital to provide the loving care. The difference between a healing hospital and a hospital environment is the way that the health care employees look at their patients. Realizing that the environment of a healing hospital is going to be different that a normal hospital environment is the third. He notes that the way that traditional hospitals have the gowns, identification numbers, and shared rooms are just a few of the ways that it seems more like a robotic environment compared to a loving and compassionate one. (Chapman, 2003) Along with the environment, comes the way that the workers treat the patients. Healing hospitals focus on the emotional and spirit filled needs of the patient rather than not believing in everything the patient needs. In order to get the health care employees helping their patients with loving care, its important that the healing hospital leaders uplift the staff members with it themselves. Giving the staff members loving care and uplifting them, helps them contribute that and pass it onto their patients which is an important part of the recovery stage for the patients in a healing hospital.
In Matthew 13:15 Jesus says; “For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.” (Matthew 13:15, NIV) This bible verse spoke to me because when you are caring for a person it goes way beyond what their body needs. Having this relate to healing hospitals helps make sure that a person is getting not only their physical needs to be met, but also their hearts are being healed as well. When a person’s heart is healed, that is when the real healing begins.
