The Honorable U.S. House of RepresentativesWashington, DCDear Representative, I am writing to you as a constituent and nurse provider in the state of Florida. I am writing to urge you to support the block of the state law that intends to ban abortions and restrict abortion medication after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling of Roe v. Wade, 410 US 113 (1973) conferred the right to abortion as a constitutional right. However, the constitutional reproductive right was reversed and overturned by a Supreme Court ruling. This allowed individual states to create independent laws on the legality of medical abortion procedures and access to medication. On 12th April 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill prohibiting abortions after 15 weeks. The bill replaced the previous bill that permitted abortion medications to be provided up to the 24th week of pregnancy. Passage of the anti-abortion bill will: 

• Limiting access to abortion procedures and medication will force thousands of women to cross state lines to access reproductive care. This creates health disparities as minorities and women of lower socioeconomic status will not be able to access medical abortions. 
• The new bill amendments do not consider pregnancies because of rape, sexual assault, incest, or human trafficking. This takes away their freedom to make choices over their bodies. 

This stringent ban also increases the rate of “back-door” abortions as women will resort to using telehealth consultations to secure the pills online and self-medicating. This increases the risk of abortion-related complications and mortalities. 

Currently, Judge Cooper has ruled that the bill violates the protections that are enshrined in the United States constitution. This has provided a temporary block as the case proceeds. Republican lawmakers have vowed to pursue more stringent anti-abortion laws. I urge you to support the block of the Florida state law that intends to ban abortions and restrict abortion medication after 15 weeks of pregnancy. I recommend that you collaborate with other healthcare rights organizations, such as Planned Parenthood, to fight for Florida women’s fundamental reproductive freedom and rights.
