In order to promote the nursing profession and ensure that Florida residents are provided with high quality, safe healthcare, the Florida Action Coalition was established in 2011. This initiative serves as a means of meeting health care needs and contribute to the development of a culture by promoting health equity and well-being (Campaign for Action, n.d.).

A number of changes have taken place in the nursing profession over the past few years, and these changes are expected to continue. In order to provide quality care to their patients, nurses must remain adaptable. One challenge that I foresee as an issue in the upcoming years is a nursing shortage. According to Tamata et al. (2021), the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates “that there will be a shortage of 7.2 million health workers to deliver healthcare services worldwide and by 2035 the demand for nurses will reach 12.9 million” (para.3). Nursing is a critical part of the healthcare system and registered nurses comprise the majority of the nursing profession. There is no doubt that nurse retention is under pressure. However, the recent pandemic has brought to light the aging workforce, nursing burnout, and fear.

It is also imperative to note the development of various infectious diseases and disasters that add to the increased stress and responsibilities for nurses. Nurses have played a pivotal role in helping manage the Covid-19 pandemic of the past two years as well as the current Monkey Pox outbreak. In the past 10 years, over 2 billion Americans have been affected by disasters (Al Harthi et al. 2020). Whether natural or manmade, nurses are faced with the responsibility to respond in a timely manner and we are sure to be hit by more.

Healthcare’s future can be redesigned with the help of nurses. As we have learned throughout the duration of the course, joining a nursing organization whether local, state or national, is a way to advocate for policy change. Other ways are through social media engagement, self-governance within a hospital setting and voting.
