Migration Issue in the United States Essay
Learning Activity Instructions
The questions below come from your reading in Module Seven. The questions come from the reading as a whole, so you may need to go back and check out the reading again to be ready to answer. As you jot down your responses, please carefully consider each set of questions and ideas, and consider presenting a full, and complex answer to the set of questions in each section, instead of taking them one question at a time. You will then conclude with a personal response, and personal reaction to the readings.
It is also important to note that for many in this class, just as with previous modules, some of these questions may not be theoretical but be connected to personal experience – often difficult personal experience. I have noticed that sometimes for students who were born and raised in the United States, these issues can seem “far away.” Yet for students who are immigrants or refugees, or who come from immigrant or refugee families, these issues are deeply personal.
Four Groups of Questions
Question Group One – Section One: The 2014 Child Migration Crisis
Given the fact that migrant children are fleeing various kinds of violence and extreme poverty, how should the U.S. government respond? Should the government pass laws granting a general amnesty? Or should it follow a zero-tolerance policy, automatically returning any and all unaccompanied minor migrants to their countries of origin so as to discourage additional immigration that will stress the already overwhelmed system?
A functional perspective theorist might focus on the dysfunctions caused by the sudden influx of underage asylum seekers, while a conflict perspective theorist might look at the way social stratification influences how the members of a developed country are treating the lower-status migrants from less-developed countries in Latin America. An interactionist theorist might see the significance in the attitude of the Murrietta protesters toward the migrant children. Which theoretical perspective makes the most sense to you?
Question Group Two – Section Two: Managing Refugees and Asylum-Seekers in the Modern World
Refugees need help in the form of food, water, shelter, and medical care, which has worldwide implications for nations contributing foreign aid, the nations hosting the refugees, and the non-government organizations (NGOs) working with individuals and groups on site (The United Nations Refugee Agency 2014). Where will this large moving population, including the sick, elderly, children, and people with very few possessions and who have not had the opportunity to engage in a long-term plan, go? What is an “American” cultural value that speaks to this issue and how do you feel that value should influence the Unites States’ attitudes and policies toward refugees and asylum seekers?
Question Group Three – Section Three: Environmental Racism
In this section of the text, the examples are only a few of the hundreds of incidents that American Indian tribes have faced and continue to battle against. Sadly, the mistreatment of the land’s original inhabitants continues via this institution of environmental racism. But this goes beyond incidents past and present in American Indian territory and includes issues in our very own city. Here’s an article from the LA Times (Links to an external site.), and here’s a scholarly journal article (Links to an external site.) (hint: This means you can use this in any essay you write for college – as long as it relates to what you’re writing about, of course). I ask the same question about environmental racism that I asked for Question Group Two: What is an “American” cultural value that speaks to this issue and how do you feel that value should influence the Unites States’ attitudes and policies surrounding the issue of environmental racism?

You may want to reread it now using the skills of metacognitive reading, and talking to the text.
It will be helpful to take notes on key concepts and ideas generated by the reading (and if you want to try a more formal note-taking system, give the classic Cornell Notes (Links to an external site.) system a try!).
It may also help to list the groups that are involved in the institutions in this town (Hazleton), with a short note about each group, as well as the events that are described in the article, with a short note about each event.

Thinking about the ideas we read about types of groups, size of groups, the structure of groups, and formal organizations decide which one you would like to use to analyze the intuitions in Hazleton or the events described in the article.

Organize your thoughts and writing from your answers to one and two above, and post both in this discussion. You will likely post 2-3 short paragraphs, although you are also welcome to experiment with posting your ideas in sketchnote form, in a mini-essay, or through weaving in and out (compare and contrast style) of your thoughts about group issues from the article and your thoughts about group issues from an institution or event in your own community. Writing from your positionality and making choices about how you will use language to best express yourself is always welcome!
