Before you deliver your public speech for this class, think about what makes an effective public speaker. Who do you think is an effective speaker and why are they effective? In particular, address, how does the chosen speaker’s use different language strategies enhance or undermine their communication effectiveness? How can you adapt any of the speaker’s strengths for your own presentation? If you are having trouble coming up with a speaker, go to American Rhetoric which lists and provides the Top 100 speeches of the 20th Century, provides speech manuscripts (and some videos) of important speeches of the 21st Century, and give you access to many more speeches that you might use.
With your initial post, include link to a speech or speaker.
To get the most credit, remember to do the following:
- create an initial post addressing the prompt by the due date indicated in the course,
- refer explicitly to reading/viewing material in your initial post (and cite it),
- respond substantially to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts within a couple of days of the due date, and
- reply to at least one response to your initial post, if your initial post receives a response within three days of the due date. If the instructor responds to your initial post, you should also reply.
