Media Analysis
NOTE: This assignment is essentially the same as the Media Analysis Paper #1. You should choose a DIFFERENT example from the media than the one use selected for your first paper. Also we have covered additional chapters since the time you submitted Media Analysis Paper #1. As such, the concepts from the text you select to explain your item should also reflect the additional content we’ve covered (i.e. don’t just pick concepts from Chapter 1 for the Media Analysis Paper #2). Instructions are as follows:
Pick some example from the media. Something noteworthy that gets your attention would be great. Don’t feel limited that it should only be a website, TV show, or news article. Strange advertisements, video games, apps, etc. are all fair game for this assignment. The first section of this 3-5 page paper (750-1400 words) will explain this item in detail. For the second section review your notes and our textbook to find links to concepts we’ve discussed. Try to find 5 ideas that might explain or offer insight into the item you picked. These ideas should be explained and put in bold and/or underlined when discussed in your paper.
USE THE DEFINITIONS DIRECTLY STATED IN THE TEXTBOOK; WORD FOR WORD IS FINE IN THIS CASE. YOU NEED TO INCLUDE AT LEAST FIVE SPECIFIC CLASS CONCEPTS FROM THE TEXTBOOK. Here’s an example of what this section should look like:
Let’s say you picked Know Your Meme as the item you’ll be exploring in the paper.
"Know Your Meme is an example of the growth of Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is the second generation of web services which frequently emphasize user uploading over downloading. Know Your Meme’s content is derived exclusively from user uploads of memes, and, thus…"
NOTE: This is a clear example of a media item. The term comes directly from the textbook and is in bold/underlined. The definition ("Web 2.0 is the second generation of web services which frequently emphasize user uploading over downloading") comes directly from the textbook, as well. The link between the media item and definition is then clearly explained in the next sentence.
-OR-
Let’s say you picked Howard Stern as the item you’ll be exploring in the paper.
"Howard Stern frequently has performers from pornographic films on his program and often uses profanity. A radio personality who uses such tactics is often called shock jock which is a performer who pushes the boundaries of acceptable speech to engage listeners and boost radio ratings. Stern’s use of provocative content as a shock jock has allowed him to gain visibility and notoriety, thus…"
NOTE: This is a clear example of a media item. The term comes directly from the textbook and is in bold/underlined. The definition ("a performer who pushes the boundaries of acceptable speech to engage listeners and boost radio ratings") comes directly from the textbook, as well. The link between the media item and definition is then clearly explained in the next sentence.
