The student’s post (Respond to this): MS
Do you believe that the advanced practice nurse can bridge the nurse-patient cultural gap? The answer is a strong Yes!! However, we must take steps to work towards this goal. Where should we start? We can start by becoming culturally competent. Everynurse.org (2019) posted an article on the Seven steps to become a more culturally sensitive nurse, it discusses the barriers of cultural differences in health care which is language, cultural traditions, health literacy and cultural assumptions.
Language: America is a melting pot of different cultures and with that we have many languages. As health care providers we must make sure we have a translator or translation technology for better communication.
Cultural Traditions: Cultural traditions can conflict with medical care, as health care providers we must take the time to learn more about different cultures and their traditions. We can do this by reading books on the culture or access information via the internet. If possible, we can see how to incorporate those traditions into their medical plan.
Health Literacy: According to Bermudez (2020) health literacy is best applied when a patient can understand the health information and comprehend the consequences presented in order to make an informed healthcare decision. It is important to make sure that the patient understands the information given to them. Asking them to repeat back the information you gave them to ensure that they understood what you were trying to tell them. Cultural Assumptions: This is something we are all guilty of; making assumptions about different cultures. Making cultural assumptions is something that we must try to avoid as health care providers. We should take time to learn about different cultures. One simple way is to start by looking at the different cultures around us in the areas where we live. We can also learn from our co-workers, friends and neighbors who are from different cultures. Taking these steps can help begin the process of bridging the cultural gap between nurse-patient.
