1. essay consists of four basic parts: an identification of the book;an analysis of the book consisting of a statement of theme and the correct identificationof the authors thesis; a brief critique of the book that includes an objective andsubjective evaluation; and testing conclusions. Each of these parts are explained ingreater detail below.2. Identification of the Book: At the top of the first page of the actual essay (not on thecover page) include a bibliographical entry for the book the essay is focusing on. Here arethe bibliographical entries that will be required for each essay presented in order ofassignment.
3. Analysis: The analysis of the book consists of two parts. First, write a statement of themefor each book by answering each of the following questions as each applies to the bookthe essay is focusing on: who is the book about; what is the book about; where do themajor events described in the book take place; and when do the major events described inthe book take place. Second, correctly identify the authors thesis by locating it in thePrologue or Introduction of the book. Once you have located the correct thesis quote it inits entirety and cite the page number in parenthesis at the end of the quoted statement.Please Note: Failure to identify the correct thesis will result in a 50-point deduction offyour overall book essay.
4. Criticism: The critique of each book consists of providing an objective evaluation and ansubjective evaluation of each book.a. Objective Evaluation: Look to see if the author of the book includes abibliography and/or endnotes in their book. Does the authors selection of sourcematerial inspire confidence in their work? Does the author seem well-informedbased on your review of this material? Does the authors thesis seem logical?Answer these questions in your essay and you will produce an objectiveevaluation of the book.b. Subjective Evaluation: What is your opinion of the book? Does the book seemlike it will be interesting and enjoyable, or dull and boring? Would you recommend to a friend or colleague who was not a student in this course? Whatabout the book do you think you would like the most? What do you think youwould like the least? Answer these questions in your essay and you will producea subjective evaluation of the book.
5. Testing Conclusions: After completing the analysis and critique of the book, test yourconclusions by locating at minimum two (2) published reviews of the book. Read eachreview and state whether or not the review was positive, negative, or neutral. Afterwards,indicate which of the two published reviews you thought was best and briefly explainwhy.
6. The analysis, criticism, and testing conclusions make up the body of the book essay. Inaddition to the essay itself, students must also include a cover page and a works citedpage. The cover page must include the students first and last name, the title of the course,the course identification numbers, and the date the final draft of the essay is due in theupper-right hand corner of the cover page. Additionally, each page of the book essay,with the exception of the cover sheet, must include the students last name and pagenumber in the upper-right hand corner of the page. All book essays must use font styleTimes New Roman and font size 11. The main body of all book essays must be doublespaced, but the information appearing on the cover sheets and works cited page must besingle-spaced. Samples modeling the correct format for both the cover page and workscited page will be provided to students during the semester. Please Note: Final BookEssay drafts that do not include all of these items, a correct coversheet, the students lastname and page number in the upper-right hand corner of every page except for the coverpage, and a works cited page will not be accepted by the professor.
7. The works cited page will include complete bibliographical entries for the two publishedreviews used to test conclusions. Students must utilize the Hanging Indention for eachitem included on the Works Cited page. Students who fail to do so will have pointsdeducted from their overall book essay grade. TH
