What happens (and in all likelihood is never going to) when the machines we use become self aware, become conscious? We built them, we use them, we fix them, but we don’t consider them as individuals. They are, in effect, slaves. But what if, by some unknown mechanism, they become conscious, they understand who they are and what they are doing? How do we treat them? What do we owe them? (Like humans we have no idea why we are conscious or how we became so, so don’t bother trying to figure that out.)
