Requirements
Descriptive Statistics
1. Download and save 2 datasets in MS Excel format from the Department of Statistics, Singapore website, SingStat Table Builder. The data may be on the Singapores economy, industry, trade & investment, population, households or society. The datasets downloaded do not need to be complicated. You may want to select datasets that is of interest to you and/or your work and ensure that the datasets are sufficient for you to perform descriptive statistics, uncover and compare interesting trends among groups (e.g. people-groups, age-groups, industry-groups) and/or across time (e.g. in the 1980s vis–vis 2010s).

2. Seek and obtain approval from your module tutor for the 2 datasetsdownloaded.
3. Perform descriptive statistics on real-life data using MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak. Refer to the detailed illustration and instructions on how to perform descriptive statistics using MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak from the video lectures taught in class and in Polymall. Save the output of the descriptive statistics on the same worksheet as your raw data.
4. Analyse the 2 datasets using the descriptive statistics generated (central tendency, dispersion and skewness) to uncover and compare interesting trends among groups (e.g. of people, age-groups, industry-groups) and/or across time for a single group (e.g. in the 1980s vis–vis 2010s).
5. Note that 2 datasets mean 2 different variables. For example, age and income are 2 variables. However, age of males and age of females will be considered 1 variable. Thus, you would need to select data on 2 different variables for this assignment.
6. Prepare a written report on your analysis and findings.
Continuous Probability Distribution
solve the following continuous probability distribution cases.
a) The quarterly revenue data of SMEs from a sector is normally distributed with a mean of $458,600 and a standard deviation of
$78,500. A financial analyst is examining the revenue data to determine the revenue trend of SMEs for the sector.
2. Based on your cases, solve the following problems using the continuous probability distribution techniques.
a) State the mean, standard deviation and variance of the population. (3 marks)
b) Describe how the normal curve will look when the mean decreases and the standard deviation increases. (4 marks)
c) Calculate the amount for the top and bottom kth percentage of the population, where k is your register number in your class register. (8 marks)
3. Write down your answers with appropriate workings and illustrations of diagrams in your report.
Submissions
Report
A written report of not more than 3 pages excluding cover page and appendices Arial Font size 12 with single spacing must be submitted by each learner. The report should consist of the following parts:
1. Cover Page Include a cover page with the assignment title (BM5004 ICA 1: Business Statistics Individual Assignment), name and admission number of the learner.
Descriptive statistics
2. Data Analysis Include the analysis of the 2 datasets using the interpretation of the descriptive statistics generated (central tendency,
dispersion and skewness).
3. Findings Include any comparison among groups (e.g. of people, agegroups, industry-groups) and/or across time for a single group (e.g. in the 1980s vis–vis 2010s) using the descriptive statistics generated or any interesting trends uncovered. Include any reason that could substantiate the findings.
4. The MS Excel file with the raw data downloaded and output of the descriptive statistics must be submitted with the report.
Continuous probability distribution
5. Solutions for the continuous probability distribution case.
6. Appendices, providing the
a) 2 raw datasets downloaded from from the Department of Statistics, Singapore website, SingStat Table Builder.
b) the output of the descriptive statistics generated by the MS Excel Data Analysis Tool Pak.
c) Workings and illustrations of diagrams for the continuous probability case.
