Self-Managed Teams: Directly manage the day-to-day operation of their particular process or department. They are authorized to make decisions on a wide range of issues, such as safety, quality, maintenance, scheduling, and personnel. Their responsibilities also include processes traditionally held by managers, such as goal-setting, allocation of assignments, and conflict resolution.

Teams are vital to TQM implementation. No matter if your work environment is an actual “team” of multiple employees in a department or function, or, your work environment is you managing processes and communicating to others, we need to think in a “team mindset”. That’s where we recognize that everything is a a connected value chain and discrete details affect those positioned in succeeding activities and cross functionally. Don’t make decisions in a silo.

When TQM is the goal, implementation should bring the collaboration of the team or for those “lone wolfs” those that are affected (stakeholders) to work as a team to implement the best process forward.
