In this frenetic climate, we tend to focus on developing individuals’ cybersecurity knowledge and talent and putting them on the front line as quickly as possible. In the mad rush, we often forget to consider how new recruits could potentially abuse these abilities on the job or in the wild. Lacking context on cybersecurity ethics, individuals must defer to their personal moral compass. How does this lead to good decisions as often as it leads to mistakes?

Often times in most professions, there are two perspectives to take when entering a job role. There is the educational perspective which is learned in text books, schooling, academic research journals, and the like. Then the other perspective is real world experience. A balanced combination of these two perspectives is ideal for cybersecurity positions at any level. With the educational perspective it is seen as “what it should be like”, and then the real world perspective is “what is really is”. Then the goal of any professional in these positions is to use experience and educational knowledge to best reach the best practice and industry standards. This is where the rubber meets the road. When rushing new professionals who lack the experience in certain situations, one is often led to lean on their moral compass to make decisions. This is where real world experience is gained. Often times it can lead to mistakes and other times it will not. The difference is, with mistakes driven by a moral compass, will lead an individual to grow. Growth not just professionally, but perhaps personally and relationally. I believe the mistakes come fewer as experience is grown. The key here is what drives and perspectives build the foundation of your moral compass. Sometimes an individual’s moral compass is not aligned with ethical or even spiritual behaviors.
Another approach is to assure that not just cybersecurity knowledge is developed during the process of building talent in individuals. Teaching ethics and ethical based problem solving should be taught as well. Providing tools for situations that might arise helps to not have to “guess” how to solve problems in moral based decisions.
There is a lack in ethics teaching as it pertains to cybersecurity. How to handle certain situations in cybersecurity have not been fleshed out globally and needs to be addressed. Ivan Kwiatkowski from Kaspersky Labs mentioned in a conferences, “…allocating more attention to ethics” and said that it was time we adopted a global code of conduct too.”

When hiring new employees, I feel you need to limit their access at first, but also force IT security training from the start. “Trust has become the new battleground for digital success. To win, organizations need to master the fundamentals of data ethics.” (O’Farrell, 2019) all employees should have to go through training with a test at the end. This will at least ensure they were trained on the ethics expected by their new employer. Then they need to gain access little by little, this will keep any new person from gaining access to items they do not need. I am a huge proponent of least access, “if you don’t need access, you don’t get access.”
If the new employee was raised with good morals and ethics, then usually it will have a good outcome, however, the opposite is also true and it is impossible to know the experiences of someone that helps build their morals unless you were around their entire life and even then it is hard to know what impacted them more.
