Basic to any business plan or strategy is the SWOT analysis. Before building the actual CSR plan, you must determine what framework currently exists in the organization and what might be possible. Consider the entire organization, from overall financial health to employee motivation.

Strengths – Evaluate the internal strengths of the organization and how these strengths can be maximized. Example: Motivated employees.

Weaknesses – Identify the internal weaknesses of the organization in order to determine how these weaknesses can be minimized or offset. Example: Limited budget.

Opportunities – Evaluate the external opportunities available to the organization. Example: Needs-based community.

Threats – Anticipate any external threats that could pose a problem. Example: Main competitor with a CSR plan in place.
