After examining the research in human development presented in your required resources, please choose and complete one of the following discussion options: Option A: The brain goes through many changes as we age. Select and examine a developmental phase (infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age) and describe the status of the brain at the selected phase. How may this shape behavior? Option B: Sleep patterns change as we age. Select and examine a developmental phase (infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age) and provide a description of the sleep patterns at the selected phase. Size, and developmental changes occur with growth and age. Information begins to process and store differently as time passes, cognitive development changes, and individuals begin to utilize larger portions of their brains. Infant brains are remarkable in their growth process. Their brains are almost sponge like, in their ability to retain information, even though their actual brain size is smaller and they are using less of their brain capacity. As infants, brain development is differently than in later stages of life. At two thirds the size of an adult brain, brain activity is vital to long term brain health. During these first few months after birth, the infant brain continues to grow at an excessive rate. In fact, during early childhood, the number of neural synapses being connected in the frontal cortex peaks, and this period of development is often associated with a child’s growing abilities in attention, working memory, self-regulation, and planning. (Shriner & Shriner. 2014) The rate in which an infant brain is growing, is faster than that of the adult brain. At about three months, an infant’s power of recognition improves dramatically; this coincides with significant growth in the hippocampus, the limbic structure related to recognition memory. Language circuits in the frontal and temporal lobes become consolidated in the first year, influenced strongly by the language an infant hears. For the first few months, a baby in an English-speaking home can distinguish between the sounds of a foreign language. She loses this ability by the end of her first year: the language she hears at home has wired her brain for English. (Lipina & Colombo. 2009) Protecting the infant brain becomes critical to brain health as the child ages and rapid growth is occurring. Avoiding falls, injuries or sudden jarring is critical. The excessive shaking of an infant, also known as, shaken baby syndrome, is so disastrous to infant development, due to the impact on brain function and the sensitivity of the infant brain. This form of abuse can cause brain damage and even death in infants. In addition to physically protecting the brain, the infant brain must also be constantly stimulated to increase brain activity during this rapid growth period. Children in low stimuli environments are at risk for depressed brain activity as they age. They require interaction and personal stimulation to increase brain function and develop proper growth. The best thing you can do for your baby’s growing brain is to respond to them. During this first year of life, the infants brain will almost double in size. If the brain is not properly cared for and the development process altered, future behaviors can be effected. Decision making skills, cognitive process, addiction, mood, these all effect behavior and life choices. Proper growth and a healthy environment become critical for future brain development.
