To help you get to know more about the research conducted in the department (and begin to think about your own research question and subsequent literature review), you will select two faculty members from each of the graduate areas in our department (Clinical, Cognition & Neural Science (CNS), Developmental, & Social), find one publication written by each faculty member, and cite that paper in APA style. Last, you will briefly write about which of these faculty members’ research is most interesting you and summarize what their program of research is all about. Thus, the goals of this assignment are to (1) get you familiar with our department and possibly get you connected to ongoing research, (2) become exposed to various areas of research to help you think about your own idea, and (3) practice making APA-style citations.
First, to find faculty, go to our department website (https://psych.utah.edu/graduate/index.php)
and select the Ph.D. Programs. Find two faculty members in each of the four areas (8 total).
Second, you will need to find one of each faculty member’s articles (either on the website, on their CV, or by searching on the Marriott Library’s research database). I strongly recommend using the Purdue OWL site for APA style help or our own Marriott Library for for APA style help. List each article in APA style (e.g., Dr. Sheila Crowell is a researcher in the Clinical Area. Crowell, S. E., Beauchaine, T. P., & Linehan, M. M. (2009). A biosocial developmental model of borderline personality: Elaborating and extending Linehans theory. Psychological Bulletin, 135(3), 495-510.).
Finally, you will pick one of the eight people listed as someone with whom you might like to work in the future and summarize what you think they do for their research (in your own words!).
This is to help you learn more about the research done in our department and maybe assist in getting you connected with a research lab.
