Character Analysis AssignmentChoose a character from The Scarlet Letter and analyze this character. Analyze means to examine, closely study, and evaluate in order to better understand. Your paper should NOT be a general description of the character, but a focused analysis that presents a clear argument about the character and his or her significance to the novel. Basically, why is this character important, and/or why are their actions important to the story? To begin your paper, choose the character you want to analyze in the first few chapters, be sure to note whenever this character is referenced, and then categorize those excerpts according to the six elements of character analysis: appearance, speech, actions, words of others, environment, thoughts/feelings. Select those elements which are most applicable to your analysis.Some possible ways to focus your analysis are as follows: Consider the character at the moment he or she must make an important decision. How did he or she come to this crisis? What are the options? What decision does the character make? What does that decision reveal about the character? Analyze the characters relationship with another character. What does the relationship reveal about him or her? How is the relationship significant throughout the rest of the novel? What is the characters most important trait? How does this trait shape the character as a whole? How does the character demonstrate this trait? How does this trait affect his or her interaction with other characters? Does the character change over the course of the novel? How is the character different at the end of the novel than at the beginning? What brings about this change? Is the change sudden or gradual? If the character does not change, what does this reveal about him or her? Requirements: Your thesis should be a critical analysis of the character you choose. For instance, Pearl is an interesting character is not a thesis statement. Your thesis needs to create an argument about the character, and your paper should work to prove your argument. For example, a thesis sentence like this one might be more appropriate for this paper: Although the townspeople judge Hester Prynne unfairly, Hester rises above their treatment and becomes both cleansed and revered by the novels end. Your essay should be 3-5 pages of generously detailed and organized paragraphs. You must avoid summarizing in this paper.Each body paragraph must follow the format from your thesis statement and have at least 3 examples from the text to support your main idea (including at least 2 quotes).
