Writer Choice
40040Part 1
In this week’s module, we will go into more depth on evolution and diversity. You will learn about specific organisms and detailed topics related to evolution. Completion of this activity will assist you in understanding Module Outcome 1:
MO1: Discuss the evolution and diversity of a specific kingdom. (CO4)
Begin by reading the Module Notes and Chapters 15, 16, and 17. Then choose one of the three chapters to focus on. Next, address the prompts below:
Discuss the most interesting item/topic you found in the chapter of your choice.
Give a detailed description of your selection and how it fits into the larger themes of evolution and diversity in the kingdom of your chapter choice (e., microbes, plants and fungi, or animals).
Explain why this topic is so interesting to you.
What else would you like to know about your selection? Or, provide new questions you would like to see addressed.
Part 2
This week’s discussion concerns new developments in evolutionary biology. Scientists are still learning about evolution. There are new discoveries made every day! Completing this activity will assist you in mastering Module Outcome 2:
MO2: Articulate a current topic in evolution in an oral presentation. (CO4, CO6)
As we discussed in the previous modules, there are important differences between scholarly peer-reviewed articles and the popular media that we need to keep in mind. Every day, hundreds of research articles are published in scholarly peer-reviewed scientific journals. Some of this research makes its way into the popular news as well, making it easier for the public to understand scientific findings, but also sometimes misrepresenting, exaggerating, or simplifying the scientific research. So, when we read about scientific processes in the popular news media, we always need to be critical consumers; to consider, for example, the original publication the research is based on, how the article represents the core principles of biology that we’ve learned about in this course, and the perspective and potential biases of the author and publication source. Not all popular publications are equally reliable or of equal quality.

In this week’s discussion, you will choose a recent article concerning any aspect of evolution. Because it is so multifaceted, evolution is the subject of many peer-review research articles in biology and medicine. It is also something that touches all of us in one way or another so it is a frequent subject of popular news articles as well.
First, read the Module Notes and Chapters 15-17 in the textbook. Next, choose a recent article on about any aspect of evolution. For example, the article may be the discovery of a new organism and where it fits on the evolutionary tree. Or, it could be about new findings that change current ideas about evolution. Your article choice may be from either a peer-reviewed journal article or a popular news article. If you need ideas for your search, use the links below.

Then, using your article and knowledge gained from this module, prepare an audio presentation of less than 2-3 minutes. Your purpose is to create an educational weekly audio for a syndicated news podcast called Current Events in Evolution, meant for postsecondary science students.
The audio presentation should be less than two minutes long.
Along with the audio, you need to include a written transcript of your presentation. This can be copy/pasted into the body of your discussion board post.
You should also include a list of any references used in your post and audio presentation, using APA
