39645Eukaryotic cells possess internal membrane bound components called organelles. These organelles have specific structures and functions.
Let’s consider the eukaryotic cells of humans. Our bodies are made of trillions of cells of all different types. In order for cells to function properly, all the parts of the cell must function properly. Aberrations of an organelle can result in problems for the cell, and ultimately, the individual. Thus, there are medical conditions associated with organelles. This activity will help you master Module Outcome 2: Identify organelles and relate them to cellular functions (CO1, CO2).
Begin by reading the Module Notes and Chapters 4 and 5 in the textbook.
First, choose one of the organelles listed below and summarize its structure and function. Then, in the same post, research a medical condition associated with your organelle choice. Describe the following: What is the condition/disease? What is the cause? What are the symptoms? Be sure to relate what you have learned about the condition/disease back to the structure and function of the organelle.
nucleus
mitochondrion
lysosome
endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough)
Golgi apparatus
